it was the election day when they arrived at Naples, the election situation was not discussed so much as the D Day in Egypt. The group chose to set headquarters in Geneva because it was central and neutral. It also was a university town. Messrs. Horton and Savage went to Geneva to arrange for the housing while Mrs. McLain was arranging for the transport of the remaining group. The Faculty was met by American people in Geneva with a remarkable display of hospitality and a true spirit of fellowship. Report of Mrs. McLain: Reporting on the Activity Committee of the Geneva Faculty, Mrs. McLain mentioned that one of the first problems was to keep up the morale among the Faculty members. Many newspapers were coming to Geneva but they were often for the Franco—British side and the members spent a lot of time to know what was really going on in Egypt, The Committee arranged for tea parties, using the facilities of the American Church and inviting the American people who had wel-comed the Faculty so warmheartedly. The Committee established relations with the community and tried to explain AUC to the people of Geneva, while the cultural and educational activities in Geneva were made known to the staff. It was soon found out that not much publicity on Egypt was being circulated in Geneva. Panels were formed to take care of requests coming from organizations in Geneva. The political problems and the health problems of Egypt and the Middle East were discussed. The relief program in Geneva was coordinated to the program of AUC. The fine recepe--- tion the Faculty got from the Egyptian community was something to be noted. There were two or three social sessions which Mrs. Ahmed Hussein attended. She was very interested in the relief program of AUC. Report of D r. Hirabayashi: Reporting on the social setting of Geneva, Dr. Hirabayashi mentioned that the Faculty arrived at Geneva on the 9th of November, when the excitement over the war situation in Egypt had begun to subside and the drive, on the part of the Swiss people, to hoard food supplies had calmed drown, Switzerland, though neutral, was not so in fact. The people were concerned about Hungary to such an extent that the situation in Egypt was almost clipsed. The sources of information were predominantly French, English and Israeli. That was a challenge to our group, which tried its best to present the Egyptian side and the Egyptian arguments, Two Comments from Dr. Ingram and Dr. Chavarria: Dr. Ingram told the Faculty that she had not been accustomed to troop carriers, as was Dean Horton. The eva-cu aticn trip was difficult but everybody was cheered when they found the US band playing for them in Geneva. Dr. Chavarria said that he felt cold out there and that he was immensely glad to be back at AUC, News of Individual Members: Mrs. Hellenbach and Mrs, Chavarria went to the States with their children. Miss Provinse also went to the States. Dr. Harvill flew to the States because of the illness of his mother. He expected back at AUC shortly after Christmas. Dr. Meinardus went directly to Hamburg from Naples. Mrs. Horton came from London to Geneva where she spent a few days. After seeing her back to London, Dean Horton came back to Geneva, Mr. Geddes is now in London exchanging views with university people in tLe field of oriental studies.
