1 i FACULTY MEETING, CAIRO December 22, 1956 — 11 AM Mr. Hanna Rizk presided at the meeting. Report of Mr1 Hanna Rizk: Mr. Hanna Rizk opened the meeting by announcing that Dr. McLain had left the day before for Beirut to meet the people of Ford Foundation in the Middle East, and then reported the following: A. The Council's decision that Monday, December 24, be a holiday for the administrative personnel, except in those instances where there was urgent work to be done. B. The Council's decision that regular office hours be resumed on.Wed-nesday, December 26. C. The gates of the University will open as soon as the security regula-tions of the city are relaxed. The front gate will open on Monday, December 24. D. The first reopeninz assembly will be held in Ewart Memorial Hall, All the Faculty members are requested to attend this important meetinge E. The Geneva Faculty is expected to come back very soon, Mr. Hanna Rizk requested Dr. Hollenbach, Dr. Horton and Dr. Laila Hamamsy to report to the Faculty. Repart cf,D can Hollenbach: A. Re; Reopening of School, The bulletin to the teachers and the list of the emegency teaching assignments were distributed, read and discussed. Answering a query regarding the closing date for the project seminars, Dr. Hollenbach said that the deadline should be the same as in any other course, i.e., the end of the first semester. All the Faculty agreed to this interpretation. Commenting on the speed—up program of the first semester, Dr. Hellen-bach said that it meant that the normal load was becoming lg hours instead of 15, Teachers should inform the students that this is a speed-up program and shoule lead the students to recognize its implications in terms of additional efforts in study and preparation. Dr. Butros had a conflict between his F.A. & S, emergency assignment and S.B.S. classes, He was requested to work that out with Dean Hollenbach after the meeting. B. Re: Emergency Pre—Freshman Class. AUC is planning for a special emer-gency program for the last year students of some secondary schools, which will prepare them for F.A. & S. in 1957. Je feel that we should not do this unless we have 20 or 25 students. On the other hand, the program becomes very difficult if we have more than 60 studdnts. The emergency Pre—Freshman school year extends from January 8 to June 256 Each student will be taking 5 subjects plus H. & R. for LE.60. Particulars have been announced in the local press. The program may be one way of insuring a part of our coming enrollment in the Freshman class. Staffing problems will depend on the number of eligible Ap-plicants.
