- 3 - Dr. Bartlett, confined to the Embassy by the alert, called AUC, where a senior Egyptian staff member said that the situation had deteriorated in the past twenty-four hours, and was getting worse. The students at Cairo University were demonstrating against the West, particularly Americans. AUC called for police protection and received it immediately. From then on the University took its cues from the Embassy and the Egyptian staff. Shortly after noon that same day, it was decided to move the remaining bon-Egyptian staff to Alexandria.In the early evening those involved were gotten together and taken to a comfortable air-conditioned train under police protection requested by the University. Egyptian staff members were on hand to see the Americans off to Alexandria. All during Tuesday, Dean Crabbs and President Bartlett had been asking themselves whether the administrative heads should not stay behind as a reminder of the American presence. The Egyptian staff convinced them that there would be a better chance of protecting AUC if all Americans left, and at the last minute Dean Crabbs and President Bartlett decided to leave for Alexan­dria with the remaining non-Egyptian staff. In Alexandria the staff stayed in a dismal hotel just big enough for the AUC group of about fifty people. Conditions were worse there than in the widely publicized Nile Hotel in Cairo, where members of the press were lodged. The main problem, however, was not discomfort; rather, it was frustration, boredom, over-eating, and listening to all radio broadcasts but knowing little about what was really happening. The University personnel stayed in the hotel for four days. On Friday morning Dr. Bartlett called Dr. Saleh and Dr. Hussein Said, AUC's newly appointed administrator for sequestration.
