The withdrawals are: Dr. Radeau, Dean of the College Mr. Conn, Bursar and Business Executive Dr. H. Smith, Head of the Religious Department Mr. Vandersall, Head of the Science Department Mr. Gordon, Associate Professor in S.Ū.S. Mr. Parr, short term teacher. Place of one other short term teacher still vacant. hemaining in Egypt are: Dr. Watson, President Dr. Cleland, Head of Extension Division Mr. Howard, Acting Dean of College Dr. Adams, Dean of S.U.S. Mr. Patouillet, Short termer held over for 1942-43 Mr. Janssen " " secured from Assiut Mr. Nichols, under special contract. It will be observed that the foreign staff has been cut in two. Dr. Bok-tor is not listed, being Egyptian. As Dr. Boktor has constantly pointed out, if the University advertizes itself as an American institution, it must have Ameri-cans in reasonable numbers. It is no answer to fill gaps with Egyptians. The public patronize the institution because they expect to find in it vigorous and vital American influences. "When they find only Egyptian teachers," says Dr. Boktor, "they say that they could get these in their own schools and probably could find there many higher standard Egyptians than with us because better paid." All this is said as an observation on the present situation and is a criticism of no one. "C'est la guerre," as the Frenchman says resignedly. Nevertheless it spells lowered efficiency for.the University and steadily increasing strain on those in Egypt. The last withdrawal was that of Mr. Vandersall. Owing to recurring signs of nervous exhaustion, it was agreed during the summer of 1942 that he should re-turn to America with his family. It should be pointed out that the furloughs of Mr. Howard and Dr. Adams are really due in 1942-43, even though they have both agreed to remain. Also if the rule is adhered to that families shall not be separated for more than two years, Dr. Cleland will be due to return to America in the summer of 1943. 2. THE LIBRARY: Once again circulation figures have advanced from 10,616 to 13,498 exclusive of the uses of the Reserve Section which was also in excess of last year. The improvements and extensions mentioned in last year's Report have proved satisfactory. There has been but one unfavorable feature to the year's record. It is the loss of 185 books as reported by the summer inventory. Certain limitations in access to the stocks have been decided upon and a more adequate supervision at the control desk is being provided for, to check such losses
