THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO November 18, 1961 PRELIMINARY STATEMENT OF STAFFING NEEDS. 1962-63 As the Board members will recall, an unusually large number of professional staff appointments were made this last fall. The number required for 1962-63, therefore, will be relatively limited. Several appointments are necessary for the second semester of this current year. Some staff are leaving for further studies, and some are returning. All these are covered in this statement. I. Staff leaving (and returning) for further stu~. A. Mr. Raouf Kahil, who has been with the University, In Economics, for four years, is .to go to Oxford in February, to complete his doctoral work. He estimates that two years will be required. He plans, then, to return to the University. He would make an excellent permanent chairman of the department. The University has requested Ford Foundation support for Mr. Kahil's studies, but has agreed to finance his studies, on a limited basis, if the Foundation is not willing to help. B. Mr. Latif Ghobrial, who has taught Business Administration for three years, wishes to go to America for three years to study, for his PH.D. degree. beginning next :fall. He, like Mr. Kahil, is of such quality that the University will want him to return upon the completion of his studies. The FordFoundation has also been asked for financial assistance for Mr. Ghobrial. C. Mr. Evangelos Calamitsis is now in his third year of studies in Economics, at Harvard and will return to Cairo next fall to accept a permanent position in the department. While still young, Mr. Calamitsis is excellently equipped to make a major contribution to this area. These three men, after the completion of their work, will become the continuing core of the Economics department, with Western staff coming and going on shorter terms. D. Mr. Michel Wahba will be returning to the staff next fall, after three years away. with his Ph.D. in psychometrics. He will return as Regis­trar and Admissions Officer (with technical help being available in both areas), will develop the University's program of testing and measurements, and will offer some teaching and research direction in psychology. Mr. Wahba was with the University four or five years prior to his leave-taking for study
