i81 Appendix A Schedule A - Page 15 (d) Registrar's Office: After several years of hard work, Mr. Vandersall was able to report before going on furlough that the Registrar's office was completely set up with modern equipment and a satisfactory filing system. The need for such a set-up had been acutely felt for some time. Faculty recorded a well-deserved vote of thanks to Mr. Vandersall for this timely piece of work. B. Publicity: Attached herewith is a report from the Dean, who under our present arrangement is completely responsible for the publicity of the College. Two years ago, by action of the Faculty, the College Publicity was placed in charge of a director of publicity rather than in a committee. For two years a new policy of publicity has been followed and has brought unprecedented results. The time now seems to be ripe for a return to the former system and the appoint-ment of a Publicity Committee as one of the standing comcaittees of the Faculty. This will bring new brains in to the problem of publicity and should result in new plans and ideas. C. Raising Standards of Scholarship: The battle to raise stand: rds must be waged constantly if tale College is to achieve its aims. This Report has already referred to some of the difficulties that are faced at this point. The reports of Group Chairmen herewith attached are filled with accounts of what each is doing in his sector to lift scholarship to higher levels. Noteworthy among the actions of last year vas the recommendation of the Curriculum Com:.,ittee, approved by Faculty, giving a reduced evaluation to the Egyptian Government Primary Certificate. This certificate will now be accepted for entrance into our Preparatory Department one year lower than in the past. By this action the level of the entire Preparatory Department is raised by one year, and since this will affect the students going into the College, scholarship will also be raised there. This action may have an adverse effect for several years on the number of students entering our Preparatory Department with this Certificate, but after careful consideration it is clear that this action must be taken. Mention should also be made of the inauguration of a more complete study program last year. It consisted of three activities as follows: 1. Assembly Talks on flow to Study. These were given in Arabic at the beginning of the school year by Amir Eff. 2. The Distribution of a Printed List of Suggestions on how to Study. This was a reprint in Arabic from the Journal of Modern Education of an article that had been written on this subject by the Dean. 3. The Opening of a Study hall: This had long been the dream of the College and was made possible by the transfer of the Library to its new quarters. The old Library room was fitted out as a study hall and all Preparatory and Government Course classes were assigned to it for their free periods. The room and plans were under the general charge of Mr. Greene, who did an excellent piece of work. The individual periods were handled by American Teachers
