Dr. Harold Boyt Smith of the College was appointed Acting Chairman. More difficult was the problem of providing a teaching staff to take up the load carried by Dr. Boktor. Dr. Smith volunteered for some extra work and Mrs. Conn most generously contributed four periods of teaching. Thus a fairly good showing was made and the organization of the School was kept unimpaired, but it is with genuine relief that we find Dr. Boktor back in Egypt for the opening of the year 1939-40. Four men and one woman were given the degree of B.A. in Education this year. The enrollment for the year suffered because of Dr. Boktor's absence during the second semester. There were 49 enrolled during the first semester, but only 38 during the second semester, making a total enrollment of 51, but only an average of 43.5 for the whole year. The Journal of Modern Education was continued throughout the year and maintains its penetrating influence in educational circles not only of Egypt and the Sudan, but also in Iraq, Palestine, the Hedjaz, Syria, Morocco and other countries. Owing to Dr. Boktor's absence, I do not have a regular annual Report to draw upon for further details. V. General University Matters 1. The Staff: During the year 1938-39 several changes in the Uni-versity staff became effective. Dean Russell Galt resigned and Mr. Badeau who had joined the staff two years before to become head of the Character Training Group was appointed to succeed him as Dean of the College. In turn, the va-cancy left on the staff by Mr. Badeau's appointment as Dean was filled by Dr. Harold B. Smith, who joined the staff bringing to it a previous knowledge of Arabic and French and a valuable experience in Moslem work through his own missionary service in North Africa, as also through the fact that he was the son of a missionary in a Moslem field. Dr. Arthur Jeffery ' s withdrawal having become effective, the Rev. Alexander T. Gordon was appointed to the staff of. the School of Oriental Studies with special assignment to the department of Islamics. Dr. McClenahan had announced his intention of withdrawing from active service owing to increasing limitation of eyesight. After a very extended search for a man with the proper qualifications, an invitation was extended to Dr. C. C. Adams of the American Mission in Egypt to become Dean of the School of Oriental Studies. here again the Universit* hvid the advantage of securing a man with an unusual command of Arabic, with some thirty-one years of missionary experience among Jloslems and with a high reputation for scholarly work in Islamics. It is appropriate at this point to refer to the great services rendered by Dr. McClenahan both in the founding and the development of the American University at Cairo. He was your President's first choice as an Assoc-iate in the newly launched enterprise. His years of practical experience with education in Egypt first as Professor and then as President of Assiut College, his wide acquaintance with Egyptians, many of whom became promoted to the highest positions of national leadership, his contacts with the native Evangelical Church, his attractive and commanding personality, his sympathy and broad human interest,-- these qualities and qualifications made him a tower of strength as an Associate of the President, as the organizer and first Dean of theCollege, as Dean of the University, and finally as Dean of theSchool of Oriental Studies. His name and influence are built unforgettably into the history of the American University at Cairo. A corresponding tribute needs to be paid to his wife, whose spirit of cooperation, practical gifts and unceasing hospitality contributed greatly to the social life and services of the institution. Of our three-year contract young teachers, two left us at the close of the year after having rendered services of preeminent value, Mr. Robert Carson and Mr. W. Lowrie Campbell
