School of Education: Because there was some confusion in Egypt caused by the use of the ter-1 "School of Education", the Committee has voted to change the name to "Teachers' College of the American University at Cairo". 4. Handbook: Mr. Lum was authorized to draft a handbook for members of the permanent staff in Egypt. Although it seems unwise to consider print-ing this booklet at the present time, work on it is proceeding and it will be in form to be printed when the funds are available. 5. Carnegie Corporation Grant: A grant of $3,000 wa;, received from trie Carnegie Corporation for the purchase of books for the University library. The books were distributed among the different departments of the University in accordance with a carefully worked out schedule of percentages based on the Carnegie Corporation's printed lists of the basic requirements for a library. 6. The University Dean: In 1929 Dr. Robert ►). McClenahan was appoint-ed University Dean for a period of two years. The Committee approves most heartily the continuance of this appointment. 7. Vacation Allowance: Attention of the staff in Egypt has been called to the fact that the X100 allowance for vacation was intended to serve as a contribution toward securing an adequate vacation. The responsibility for thus using the money is left with the faculty member receiving it. 8. Co-education: At tile request of the President, the Committee studied the problem of co-education as it refers to the American University at Cairo, considering such points as (a) that the University seems to be entering into competition with other missionary institutions erving women students exclusive-ly and better equipped to do so; (b) that the University is not prepared to provide the special supervision and ecuipment necessary if it is to have any considerable number of women students; (c) that women students who are not fairly mature interfere seriously with the free discussion that is necessary in some classes, notably in Ethics; (d) that the value of co-education can be demonstrated by the University's taking only women students who have already completed the courses of study open to them in the women's colleges in Egypt. 9.
