A. Memorandum on the present status of three departments of the College of Arts and Sciences of the American. University at Cairo. B. Memorandum of Dr. J. T. Addison, dated April 20, 1943. C. Report to the Trustees Committee on Education dated April 26., 1943 presented by the Sub--Committee on Curriculum. 2. WHEREAS the Council in Egypt has requested that certain nomenclauture used in the College of Arts and Sciences be changed, notably College of Arts and Sciences to Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Lincoln School for the Preparatory School Department, Subdivisions -- Egyptian Secondary Section for the Egyptian Government Course, American " n to designate the College Preparatory Course. The Committee on Education makes the following recommendation: THAT the Council in Egypt be authorized to use. on the field the term FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES to designate what has hitherto been known as the College of Arts and Sciences, and the term SECONDARY SCHOOL in referring to the Pre-paratory Department, BACCALAUREATE SECTION to refer to the Egyptian Government Section, and PREPAZ ORY SECTluN to refer to the pre-college section. It is further understood that the Trustees in America and the Council in Egypt will give further consideration to the selection of appropriate names for the secondary school level and its. subdivisions. 3. THAT the American University of Cairo sign a contract with the Division of Special Services of the United States Array covering the University's cooperation in carry-ing on extension courses for the U. S. Army personnel in the. Near East provided satisfactory arrangements. can be made for the return to Egypt of personnel. now. in America. (The contract has been signed ana in return for our cooperation, the U. S. Army has undertaken to return to Egypt certain of the University personnel now in America, Notably Dr. Harold Smith.) 4. THAT in accordance with the advice of Dr. Vaughan, the University's médical ad-visor, the Committee requests Mr. Vandersaīl to resign his position with Dr. Compton at the University of Chicago not later than December 31, 1943 to devote the balance of his furlough to building up his physical health. 5. THAT Dr. Wendell Cleland be granted a leave of absence from the permanent Faculty of the American University of Cairo in order that he may serve as a member of the staff of trie Office of War Information of the .United States Goverment; the Office. of War Information to assume . complete financial responsibility, including the payment of the cost of his round trip by air between Cairo and Philadelphia and the complete arrangements for the same. This. leave shall-be from October 25, to a date in the summer of 1944, and that will enable Dr. Cleland to be in Cairo at his post on September ï, 1944. Further, it should be clearly understood that during the period of his leave, Dr. Cleland is not officially connected with the American University at Cairo, but the Trustees would appreciate his advice acid counsel at the annual meeting of the Board and at committee meetings where his knowledge of Egypt and the University would be of assistance.
