REPORT OF TEE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION OF THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO For e ear o Meetings Held: The Committee held no meetings during the year since the last meeting of the Board of Trustee; until its meeting on October 29, 1921, just previous to the meeting of the Board. (1) The Past Year. Owing to the fact that the educational development of the University has proceeded along the lines of a program already approved, special meetings of the Committee were not found necessary or practicable. The following items, however, may be reported: (1) During the past year Lr. Russell Galt has gone out to Egypt, temporarily attached to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences, although with a view to his ultimately devebping the Depart-ment or School of Education. He has been engaged in the study of the language, and has also rendered service as Registrar. (2) Mr. Arthur Jeffery of Australia, who had been in India as e missionary and whose appointment was made at the last meeting of the Trustees, has arrived in Cairo and is attached to the School of Oriental Studies. His linguistic ability and his missionary devotion unite in giving rich promise for his future work at Cairo. (3) Mr. Alfred Nicholson, graduate of Princeton, was appoint-ed a short term teacher, and has gone out to Cairo on the three year contract, particularly to teach English. (4) The search for a professor of Chemistry and Physics has been hitherto unsuccessful, although a number of naines that seemed apparent-ly promising were considered. This need is nost urgent, for the develop-ment of the Scientific Department. A further need is for a permanent professor in the Department of English, in case Mr. Cleland should be able to carry out his wishes for a transfer to the Department of Univer-sity Extension. A permanent man is also desired to take charge of the business administration of the University including the Treasurership. The foregoing needs actually exist at the present time, but the wider needs of the institution for the further building up of its faculty depend in their character to a great extent upon a number of decisions that must be made at an early date with reference to the educational development of the University. (2) Recommendations. The following matters and recommendations are submitted to the Trustees for s.doption: (1) That the President of the University be requested to study the question of the most desirable educational developments to be sought for the University, in particular: (a) The development of a residential department: (b) The further needs of the Department of Arts and Sciences; (e) The requirements for agricultural training
