2S4 Appendix C 3c Z. November 13, 1925. REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION OF THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO For the Year 1924-25. Meetings Held: Since the last meeting of the Board of Trustees, three meetings of the Committee on Education have been hald, one on April 9, 1925, in New York City; another on September 30, 1925, in New York City; and the third on November 13, 1925, in Pittsburgh. Appointments: After carefully reviewing their credentials, the following appointments were made: Erdman Harris to act as College Pastor and Director of Religious Education, beginning with September 1925. Mr. Harris was graduated from Princeton University in 1920; taught for a year at the Hotchkiss School of Lakeville, Conn.; studied a year of theology in Edinburgh University, Scotland; re-turned to this country in 1923 to become Secretary of the Princeton Y.M.C.A. After two years of further study at Union Seminary and Columbia University, he was ordained as a. minister in the Congregational Church in the spring of 1925. In addition to this preparation, he has been actively engaged in the student work of the Y.M.C.A. throughout his years of preparation and has been much in demand as a speaker in the colleges and preparatory schools of the East. Worth Howard, to act as a short term teacher of English for a period of three years, beginning with September 1925. Mr. Howard was graduated from Wesleyan University in 1922; had four years teaching experience; one year as principal of a grammar school at Brook Haven, Ohio, prior to entering college; two years of teaching in Wyoming Seminary, and a year as teacher in a boys' preparatory school in Indianapolis. Dana Johnson, to act as short term teacher of English for a period of three years, beginning with September 1925. Mr. Johnson is a graduate of Wittenberg College where he was editor of the undergraduate ne%spaper. Announcement was made of the gift of $2,500 from Dr. and Mrs. Hill to be used to help poor boys in defraying their college expenses other than tuition fees. This gift is in the nature of an experiment. If the experiment is a success, it is the understanding that an appeal will later be made for scholarships for this special class of students. An anonymous gift of $500 for the same purpose was also announced. According to the report of Mr. Galt, the University students who took the Government examinations this year fell below the average. The Committee would deem it unwise therefore to drop the Government Course at a time when we have failed to make a success of it. In addition to this, the Government Course offers an excellent opportunity to keep in touch with the other schools of Cairo and with that large sector of Egyptian society that takes up its life work in the government offices. The exact course to be followed in the supervision and teaching of the Government Course must be decided by those in authority in Egypt. The coordinating of the University's Government Course with the new courses proposed by the Egyptian Government in August rests in the hands of the faculty in Egypt. With the meagre information at present available, it would seem inadvisable to make any changes in the Government Course this year, but rather to wait for a year and profit by the experience of the Schools.
