Appendix A i67 Schedule A 1 REPORT OF THE DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY., 1928-29. Mr. President: Following the resignationaf Dr. McClenahan in May, 1928, the writer of this report was offered the Deanship of the College. Because the offer was very unexpected, it was difficult to decide immediately whether or not he should leave the newly-launched Department of Education. But the emergency created in the College demanded immediate action, so he transferred to the College in May, 1928, as Acting Dean with the understanding that he would give a final decision before the end of the school year. During the second semester an affirmative answer was sent you and the writer accepted the offer to become the Dean of the College. The public announcement of this administrative change was made by you at the Commencement Exercises in May and followed by the immediate sending out of a printed announcement card to a list of 2000 friends and patrons of the College. For the excellent and appropriate manner in which these announce-ments were made, the newly appointed Dean is very grateful and takes this opportunity of expressing his appreciation. On the whole, the work of the year registers another advance despite large difficulties that had to be met. The depletion of the American permanent staff by the loss of four experienced men (McClenahan, Eddy , Leete and Harris) ; the long and serious illnesses during the school year of two short term men (Allen and McElroy) ; and on top of these the presence of the largest student body the College has ever had, created a situation unique in our history. It might have been predicted that all that possibly could have been done was to "dig in" with the forces at hand and hold any gains that had previously been made. While the year has been characterized by such "digging in" to conserve past accomplishments, at the sae time, it has been a year of new plans, new experiments and new projects. loot to have so launched out on fresh adventures, even tith the forces we had, would have spelled defeat from the start nd in the first Faculty meeting of the year the keynote set was one of advance. It is not too early to inject even at this point a word of commendation for the most excellent way in which the staff rallied to the emergency and came off victor. The permanent men who were left (Mcquiston, Vandersall, Amir, Kiven and Howard) were a tower of strength and carried loads beyond anything they had previously been called upon to bear; the Egyptian staff, (particularly Zayyat, Sabry, Ismail (Mathematics) and Saad) excelled their previous records with us; the short-term A;aericans (Phillips, McConnell, McElroy, Allen, Greene, Bailey and Larimer) were forced to carry many tasks formerly carried by permanent men. The spirit and morale of the staff has been unusually high; as high as in any year in our history. There has been a complete absence of friction, either personal or departmental. Instead there has been a united staff work-ing as a unit in the successful accomplishment of a most heavy task. For this accomplishment the Dean is genuinely grateful
