Annual Report of the Dean to the President. 1949-50 Mr. President: It is my privilege to submit, as Dean, a report upon the work of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Lincoln School for the academic year 1949-50. With this report I give copies of reports submitted to me by departmental chairmen, special advisers, and supervisors. All the reports desired are not available; there seems difficulty always in making a complete file, yet there are enough reports to give details to the year's picture. My report is divided into six sections: Special Features, Palestinian Students, Statistics, Lincoln School, Faculty, Personnel. I have endeavored not only to report, but in some instances to appraise and point forward. I. SPECIAL FEATURES. Items to which I wish to call special attention are: (1) the enrollment, (2) the 25th annivers&ry issue of the Campus Caravan, (3) the student ex-change with Occidental College, (4) dramatic activity, (5) Arabic Language Day. (1) The largest total enrollment in our history of thirty years was re-corded - 503. Certain interesting observations can be made upon this figure. It represents the total for five classes in Egyptian secondary, four classes only in American Secondary, and four classes of the Faculty. In other words, in spite of one class in the American Secondary having been dropped, the total was at its highest point. The Faculty total of 235 is the greatest we have had, the upper classes showing the effect of the larger Freshmen classes of recent years. The number of women students - 66 - represents a record; also it is to be noted that women students are now making up more than one quarter of the total student group in the Faculty. Whether we should check the trend where-by women students may come to represent a third or more of the student body may be a matter to be reviewed as a policy question. With respect to the total Faculty enrollment another observation can be made. The number of students belonging to the Arabic-speaking group has greatly increased. The Egyptians, Palestinians, Transjordanians, Adenese, Syrians
