Appendix to Inge 159 (12) TWrJ NTY-FCURTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO Mr. President: I have the honor to present the following report for the academic year, 1949 - 1950 : - I Instructors and Classes Following the recommendations of our Administrative Committee, as to the subjects offered during the academic year, 1949 - 50, the problem was to find th appropriate staff for teaching these subjects. Furtunately we were able to make the necessary adjustments by borrowing from other departments of the University as usual, and from outside. There are two distinct types of courses: Fundamental and Supplementary. Every student is required to take the former; but only those whose background needs to be supplemented by certain cultural courses are required tc take the latter. As to the Fundamental courses, Rizk Eff. Girgis took charge of Junior Psychology (2 semesters), Mr. George H. Gardner, Junior Sociology (1st semester), and Dr. John S. Badeau, Junior Philosophy (2nd semester). For the Seniors we were able to secure Dr. El Demerdash Abdel Megid Sarhan of the Higher Institute of Education for rien Teachers (Ministry of Education) and a graduate of Columbia University, to teach General Methods of Education (2 semesters). I took charge of Philosophy of Education for the first semester and Educational Psychology for the second. As to Supplementary courses we were fortunate to be able to secure Mrs. Jane L. Stevenson to give a course in Library Science. The other courses were Remedial English and English Literature taught by Mr. Hugo Mackenzie and Mr. A. D. Bumford, respectively, both instructors in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Owing to the novelt:' of the librar:- course in Egypt, and the need for trained librarians, we opened the door to librarians in ;;giro, so that those who wish might join it. Although only seven outsiders joined in addition to our own students, the course was a good start which, we hope, will be developed later, when we shall have a qualified librarian of our own.
