225' APPENDIX I AMERICAN COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES, CAIRO * * * * * * * * 3C * * 3F * REPORT OF DEAN GALT TO THE PRESIDENT for 1934 - 1935. * * # * * * * # * * 3í- * * * * Mr. President: I regret to report that the past school year again marks a con-tinuation of the decline of the College department. While the Faculty has made some small gains while fighting against great odds, and while the absence of anti-missionary activity may be reported as a cheerful item, yet, on the whole, the past year has only continued to bring into bolder relief the vital damage done to this department by the Trustees' plan of reduction. I. (a) Falling enrolment Unchecked. The chief reason for the above statement is found in the fact that, despite the opening of a new class (For:i IV) the College enrolment continued its steady fall. The figures are as follows: Year Total Student Enrolment 1929-30 369 1930-31 355 1931-32 388 1932-33 263 1933-34 178 1934-35 155 The opening of Forms II, III, and IV, and the launching of a course in Journalism will help the situation next year. Nevertheless, even with these additions, the Registrar will not predict for next year a student enrolment of over 160. If we had merely carried on with the remnants of classes that survived the cut and had made no additions whatever our enrolment for next year would have fallen to 110 students. Rebuilding is a slow process. (b) Heavy Teaching and Administrative Loads. In an heroic effort to meet the situation the rne,ìbers of the Faculty have carried ever-increasing loads of teaching and administration. All through the attached reports from the various chairmen, the note is sounded thtit the daily routine has been so heavy that it was eliminated al-most everything but the absolutely necessary routine activities. In a College with our ideals this is a serious matter. Then extra-curricular College with our ideals this is a serious matter. When extra-curricular activities and teacher-student contacts suffer we lose our claim to uniqueness. It is there-fore with great anxiety that we have noted this year the inevitable abandon-ment of such important activities as the Science Exhibit, the English play, the English Honours Society, the Travel and Kodak Club, and the curtailment to the vanishing point of the Science Club and the Arabic Literary Society. For 1 next year the A.U.C. Review is scheduled to die a natural death
