law, Governmental organization, economic and agricultural life, and other phases of Egyptian and Moslem life. It is to be noted with deeper regret than any words of the writer of this Report can express that the year 1938-39 marks the closing year of Dr. Rcb ert S. McClenahan as Dean. Remaining in Egypt through Septe:iber 1939, just long enough to transfer to his successor, Ur. C. C. Adams, the duties of his office, Dr. McClenahan plans to return to America and to retire from active service largely because of limitations of eyesight. The loss to the work'is incalculable, and the President's sense of loss in the retirement of one who had been his true and trusted associate throughout all the rears of the University's development is inexpressable. During the year, Dr. Enderlin, who had been loaned to the School for special duties connected with Npbian language studies and the special supervision of German missionaries, was forced to retire and return to Ger aany owing to ill health. After Dr. Jeffery's withdrawal and the simultaneous absence of Dr. McClenahan, Dr. Enderlin carried for a short time the entire supervision of the School and a real debt to gratitude is due both to him and to his mission board for his work in the School of Oriental Studies. It will thus be seen that within the compass of a year and a half, the School has suffered the loss of its entire foreign staff and its replacement by a new leadership. The following are the statistics of the School for 1938-39: Enrollment Statistics: (Based on bursar's Report) American Mission, 8; American University, 5; Church Missionary Society, 12; Egypt General Mission, 7; Salaam Mission, 5; German Mission 3; Apostolic Assemblies, 6; Brethren Mission, 2; other missionaries, 7; total missionary enrollment, 55. Government officials, 9; Business men and other individuals, 62. Grand total enrollment, 126 (last year, 106) . III. Division of Extension Here again I would emphasize the importance of reading the splendid Report of this Department in which its director, Dr. Tendell Cleland, and his able associate, Mr. John Risk, set forth the work of the past year. Mr. Risk returned to Egypt from America at the beginning of the ,year after some fifteen months of study in the United States during which he secured his M.A. degree from Chicago University. This opportunity was made financially possible through the generosity of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and has contrib-uted greatly to Mr. Risk's usefulness and efficiency. "The education of Mr. Public", as we often describe tne functions of this department, has proceeded along many lines. Most important have been tile general lectures, 37 given at 25 meetings, dealing with problems in the nation's life, such as Health, Public Law and Justice, the Egyptian Fellah, Social Welfare, the Place of Woman, Democratic Ideals, and International Relations. The use of forward-looking Egyptians, particularly Moslems, as speakers, permits a much more vigorous discussion and a much freer criticism of existing conditions than would be possible for the speakers were they foreigners and Christians. Of the lecturers this past year 39 were Moslem and 13 were Christian; 45 were men and 7 were women. 1
