1 30i REPORT OF THE DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES For the Academic Year Ending June 12, 1931 TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY: Sir: As Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences I have the honor to present the following report for the year 1930-31. The year under review was marked by a return to normalcy after the two very hectic years which preceded it. Therefore, in retrospect, the year looms up as one of substantial accom-plishment under normal conditions. Following the general outlined adopted previously for this report there will now be considered in order: 1. Matters Relating Primarily to the Faculty. 2. Matters Relating Primarily to the Students. 3. External Relationships, and 4. Miscellaneous Matters. I. MATTERS RELATING PRIMARILY TO THE FACULTY 1. Reports of Group Chairman A. The Foreign Language Group Mr. Howard, who had so successfully carried on the organization of this group after the resignation of Dr. Eddy, was on furlough this year and his absence created a large gap that had to be filled. It was a real pleasure to welcome Mr. Warner both to this group and to the work of the College. In addition to his Arabic study he was acting Chairman of the Foreign Language Group. The presence of Mr. Howard and Mr. Warner, both full time permanent men in the same Group, will call for some new thinking and planning in Group leadership. B. The Government Course Amir Effendi's splendid report attached herewith reminds us very forcibly that this is his last report as Headmaster of the Government Course. After his furlough in 1931-32 he returns to work not in the College but in the Department of Education (now known as Teachers College). His leaving the College is no small loss, for he has been identified with it since its opening. His work as Headmaster has been of a very high order and he has been a wise and valuable leader particularly during these last four years in guiding the reorganization and enlargement of this important course. His place is to be taken by Habib Eff. Iskander who taught with us from 1922 to 1926. Since leaving us he has been Director of the Tewfik Coptic Schools and has made a truly remarkable record not only in improving their examination results but in doubling their attendance from 600 to 1200. He comes back to us knowing our ideals and our hopes for the Government Course
