80 who dealt with all major problems. This arrangement proved particularly good for the Dean, as it confronted him squarely with all the difficulties of the Govern-ment Section, and at the same time, it served to bring that Section more closely into the life of the College as a whole. Altho Rizq Effendi Girgis, the Govern-ment Section Supervisor, did very good work, there undoubtedly was some loss in efficiency, as both he and the Dean were new at the job. Further experience should make this arrangement function well. B. Enrollment of Girls The unusually large number of girls in the College this year (1 in the Junior College, 19 of the Senior College) reminds the institution that there are grow-ing opportunities in the field of co-education. As will be mentioned later, certain new problems arise with the inclusion of girls in the student body, but on the basis of this year, there can be no doubt of the value of their contribution, both social and intellectual. The time has come when we must consider the admission of girls as more than an experiment, and consider seriously their permanent )lace in the College life. C. Egyptians in Senior College The presence of a high percentage of Egyptians in the Senior College (especially in the Sophomore Class) was immediately reflected in the problems of the class room. Language difficulties and mental habits challenged the Staff to review its Ameri-can approach to the Near East mind; and there was a healthy reminder of the basic need to keep close to Egyptian ways of education. Despite the difficulties, the Sophomore class ended the year with a good number of promotions. A study of various types of intelligence tests and methods of measurement is under way by which it is hoped to select mure carefully the type of Egyptian student entering the Senior College. D. Review of the Curriculum Feeling that no thorough survey of individual courses or their relation had been made in recent years, the Faculty carefully reviewed_ the entire program of the Junior and Senior Colleges. In an extended series of meetings and discussions, every phase of the scholastic work was evaluated and a.. new alignment of courses drawn up. The starting point of the survey was not a defense of the program in force, but rather an open-minded judgment of the worth of each course in relation to the total ideal of education. The result followed closely the present type and content of the curriculum, showing the conviction of the Faculty that the lines of present development represent sound principles for the future. The two most noteworthy changes came in the language sequence of Junior College. In the Junior College, the total number of hours spent in language study was slightly reduced, but provision was made for reaching a higher proficiency in English and one (rather than two) other language - Arabic. or French. In the Senior College the Social Science courses were replaxined.to obviate. over-lapping (due to the expansion of earlier courses) and the total number of class hours was slightly reduced. In the full Dean's report, a copy of the curriculum discussion is attached, and attention is especially drawn to the content of the B.A. degree as the Faculty envisioned it.
