19() Appendix A' Page 10. the athletic work. Mr. Senseman represented a real addition, as a mature and experienced teacher, to the English section of the Government course. Mr. Phelan gave us service during his Sabbatical furlough from Carleton College and represented an outstanding addition both to the College and to the Department of Education. In general the health of the staff was good throughout the year, barring an epidemic of dengue fever that swept down, for its usual cycle of from five to ten days, thousands in the city, among there many of our own staff including the President. The doctors assure the patient that there is no known preventive or cure, but that he will not die of it, though he may sometimes come to wish he could. (2) Library: The value of a library depends not merely upon its store of books, but upon their accessibility through proper classification and card indexing; the latter depends in turn upon personnel. Our collection of books has increased during the past year by 925 volumes and now reaches a total of 19,175 volumes. More important has been the work of our Library personnel. Mr. Howard, although wholly engaged as Head of the English Department, has acted as Librarian and has stimulated many important library activities. Mrs. Maurer was engaged as half time worker, since this was all our funds would permit. Considerable progress has been made in the classifying and indexing of books and in the complete overhauling of the S.O.S. Research Library which had been allowed to depart from almost all the standard methods of classification and library rules governing users of the books. It has been an enormous task to set it in an orderly condition again, but the new system will make this valuable library much more acces-sible to students of all departments of the University. The use of the University Library is steadily increasing; the irculation figures for 1937-3S reached 5725 for general circulation and 998 for reserve books, making a total of 6723, which is a slight increase over last year's figure. Teachers from the Egyptian University and many other outsiders are making use of our library, partly because books are made so much more accessible than in the Egyptian University Library. (3) Hostel: During 1937-38, the Hostel enrolment reached a low water mark, there being only 14 students, 2 guests and 3 short termers. The reasons are hard to determine, although one outstanding factor was the falling off of Palestinian students in the College owing to stricter Egyptian im-migration regulations and disturbed conditions in Palestine. However, in spirit of unity and cooperation and in terms of high moral standards and social life and influence, the year was one of the best in the history of the Hostel. Mr. Campbell acted as Hostel master during the first semester and Mr. Carson the second. The most important fact to be recorded is that the building which has hitherto served as Students Hall is to be no longer available, as the Bishop is selling the entire property. The Hostel during 1938-39 will therefore be housed temporarily on the main campus in apartments hitherto reserved for the staff. This raises many serious problems for next year.
