Board Minutes -2- October 28, 1982 which is attached for your information. Student enrollment decreased slightly this fall from 2,225 in 1981/82 to 2,142 in the current year. New student enrollment decreased from 654 to 545, mainly due to smaller than expected enrollments in the Arabic Language Unit and in the non-degree programs. These developments have been examined in several Trustee Committees. There is some belief that, in language teaching particularly, higher tuition rates have been a factor in the decline. The ratio of male to female students in the University has remairied much the same as last year: 62.7% female and 37.3% male. The new freshman class scored higher on the Egyptian standard achievement test (Thanawiyya Amrna) than last year's freshmen - 87.0 compared to 85.0 in 1981/82. There is a $700,000 deficit forcasted in the 1982/83 budget. Because of monies budgeted for doubtful income and as provisions for inflation, it is expected that the budget will be in balance by the end of the year. During the summer 20 classrooms were refurbished and new construction on top of the Social Research Center was begun. The new space will provide increased space for the SRC and make it possible to turn half of the social science building into a site for the Jameel Management Center. The space will also house some of the training facilities for the $1.65 million dollar contract with the General Organization for Industrialization (GOFI). The library was opened for student use during the summer session. There have been a few problems with the air conditioning but temporary repairs have been made and the system is working well. There are 23 new faculty members this year, 19 Americans and 4 Egyptians. The recruiting in most areas has been extremly good, however it is still proving difficult to recruit effectively in engineering and computer science. On the fund raising campaign, Dr. Pedersen noted that the total amount of contributions and pledges has now gone over $12 million. In an October fund raising meeting in Cairo, Dr. Khalil asked the Cairo Committee to raise $1 million by the time of the February Board meeting and the recent trip to Saudi Arabia by Mr. Hedlund, Dr. Pedersen, Dr. Allam and Mr. Saunier was very successful.
