In the meantime, Dr. Simpson said he would research the organization to see what further information he is able to find on it. 4. Information Issues A. Report on 1988/89 admissions Dr. Pedersen presented to the Committee an information paper prepared by the Registrar's Office on 1988 - 1989 admissions activity. This year, 973 student were admitted. Of these, 691 were undergraduate degree students. Egyptians accounted for 72 percent of those admitted; 47 percent of the new students are male and 53 percent female. The total enrollment at AUC is now 3246, up from 2824 in 1987 - 1988. Seventy-five percent of the enrollment is Egyptian as compared to 77 percent last year. Over all, the proportion of males to females did not change. B. 1988 admission and tuition problems Changes in the national curve of the Thanawiya Aroma examinations and the lowering of the cut-off scores for admission to the top national universities in Egypt, combined with AUC's raised tuition stated in U.S. dollars to impact on AUC's admission of its largest class ever. To combat these three factors, the Academic Board at AUC agreed to reduce the minimum score considered for admission on the Thanawiya Aroma to 65 percent for Egyptians. In addition, deadlines for filing application were extended and we continued to recruit potential applicants to fill our places. Most of those students admitted because of these changes will come as full-fee paying students. As anticipated, the new tuition policy stating one tuition payable in dollars caused negative reaction. We were prepared for this on the political front having readied briefing materials and having kept both the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Education informed along with the U.S. Ambassador.The financial affect on parents resulted in a 200 percent increase in requests for financial aid and a 50 percent increase in the financial aid budget. Despite the added financial aid, however, fewer Egyptian students registered at AUC in the 50 and 25 percent subsidy areas than expected. C.
