Tuesday 5:00 PM Attending: MINUTES ALUMNI AND STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO March 12, 1985 Nile Cruise Mrs. Harmon (Chair), Mrs. Bartlett, Dr. Simpson, Dr. Reed, Dr. Hunsberger, Dr. Allam, Mrs. Iskander Guests: Mrs. Gini Stevens, Dr. Nassar 1) The agenda was approved as presented. 2) The minutes of the previous meeting were approved. 3) Report on Spring Enrollment Dr. Allam presented summary statistics for the academic year 1984-85 with special emphasis on student enrollment in the second semester 84-85. A drop in the number of foreign students from Europe and Africa was prointed out. Dr. Allam referred to AUC's attempts to recruit students abroad, especially in the field of language training. Mrs. Montassir's report on student life and activities was presented by Dr. Allam. In sports, AUC's girls' team took first place among Universities of Egypt. AUC students also took top honors in choral music, folk dancing and creative writing. In student housing, the decision to locate all women students in the Falaki Hostel and move the men to Zamalek was implemented this fall. Reference was made to the new facility in Zamalek and to its larger capacity compared to the present. ~) Alumni Report Mrs. Iskander gave a brief report highlighting the im­portant Alumni activities that have continued to grow during the academic year 1984-85. Mrs. Iskander gave special credit to Mr. Ahmad Said who coordinated a new project (1985 Scholar­ship Fund), which aims at involving students in fund raising before graduation. Commenting on this project, Dr. Reed sug­gested encouraging Alumni to give a gift to the University every five years. 5) Miscellaneous Dr. Reed brought up the subject of "interns" and asked that they meet with members of the Board of Trustees.
