Dr. Pedersen reported that the budget for the current academic year was again healthy. Due to the devaluation of the Egyptian pound and more effective controls, the rate of increase in both income and expenditure was less than in previous years. The projected increase in expenditure for 1982-83 is 7% and with a 9% increase projected for income. For the first time in the University's history, income from academic tuition will come very close to the level of operating support received from AID/ASHA, though the President pointed out that with all students now paying the increased tuition rates, future increases in tuition income would not be as substantial as has been the case in the previous three years. The President said that the Faculty had requested that the majority of the funds for salary increases be applied towards the differential between Egyptian and Foreign faculty (60% for the differential and 40% for scale increases) and indicated that the Trustee decision on salary increases would be presented in the report of the Finance Committee. . In the future, the University will have to identify mechanisms that will provide $5 million in annual operating support from the U.S. Government. Currently four possibilities are being discussed with the Ambassador and the Director of AID in Cairo
