79 The gettirgof subscriptions proved to be difficult, owing to the increasing economic distress in the country. V,e set our goal at the beginning of the year at 100 more than the previous year. As letters from old subscribers began coming in, giving economic reasons for non-renewal and as new subscriptions proved to be extra-ordinarily difficult to get, we began to feel that we would be fortunate if we could close the year without an actual loss. The annual magazine report will show about the same number of subscriptions as the previous year. This is made possible however, only because of the fact that the Egyptian Ministry of Education sub scribed for 103 copies instead of their usual nine. This is a real gain from one point uf view for it means that for the first time the Journal goes into all of the Primary and Secondary schools of Egypt, not including the Girls schools. But the figure 103 about represents our loss in individual subscriptions. I must record here a change in the method of counting subscriptions in order that the report may be properly interpreted. Formerly the sales of single copies were included in the subscription accounts as subscriptions - a certain number of sales was counted as one subscription. This is manifestly misleading. This year the actual subscriptions will show as one item and the sales of single copies as mother. As an economy rleasure no Summer Supplement to the Journal will be issued this year. Part III: MISCELLANEOUS ACTIVITIES: Girls College Class: At Miss Martin's request a class in Methods of Teach-ing was offered at the American Mission College for Girls. The entire faculty was invited to attend. No examinations were held and no credits were given. Mr. Reece went out on alternate Tuesday evenings throughout the year and held 90 minute sessions. The lecture and discussion method was used. The average attendance was probably 25 to 30. The Egyptian Educational Associations: Following private conversations during the preceding year, I invited a number of those interested in the form-ation of an Educational Association to my office to discuss the project. Uur method was to move slowly to add to our group only as we found people who were really interested. About 6 people attended the first meeting, 'll the second, and 15 the third, which I think was the last. My role was to stay in the back-ground as much as possible, to stimulate when necessary and to suggest. I did not want to develop a position of leadership, which when withdrawn at the end of the year, might prove to be disastrous. i felt that leadership must come from the Eg3 ptians themselves and that the organization and program must be essentially Egyptian. We were making nice headway when the University got into trouble because of the Christian student and it was decided that for the time being we were no longer a suitable meeting place. Immediately afterwards one of our leading spirits, Dr. Teha. Hussein, got into trouble, which drew the attention of the educational world and no other meeting was held. Breakers were just ahead however, because of the fact that one particular clique had not been invited to the first meetings, they were offended and would not come when invited and we heard that they were starting a rival organization.
