Mr. President, T7 opened the 1939-40 academic year under the flag of war. Obviously we were haunted by the idea that our work was going to be badly inter-fered with, that our enrolment was going to fall down, and that our subscriptions for the Journal of Modern Education were going to drop to a miserable figure. Contrary to these pessimistic expectations, the horizon proved to be much clearer, as far as our University is concerned. We most sincerely hope that our local atmosphere, as well as the general wide world horizon, will, during the coming year, keep us in the peace of mind we desire for ourselves and x.11 our fellow beings. I. The Journal of Modern Education. Financially the Journal is better off this year than any of the preceding years - a total of 1.150.11u or more than double our receipts for the first year. Numerically, we are only a few copies less, owing to the fact that in the first place we cut down the number of complimentary copies, and secondly we lost half a dozen subscribers in remote Asiatic localities through mail irregular-ities. The following table gives a comparative picture of the Journal during the preceding ten years. The first issue contained a detailed article on Sigmund Freud and his contri-bution to psychology and education. This article was given much publicity, as it was reproduced in several reviews and papers including "Al Moktataf" which opened its November number with it. As a result, our first issue was much in demand. The second issue was a special one wholly devoted to child psychology. This, too, seems to have been well received as we had to send extra and indi-vidual copies to odd readers outside the circle of our subscribers. Usually we keep 100 copies, or so, for future demand, and in order to make up for the unusual numbers exhausted we had to ask our subscribers to give us back the first two issues, if they were not in the habit of binding back numbers.
