The Department of Education accomplishes its purpose through two main channels, namely, the Journal of Modern Education and the School of Education. Apart from these two channels the Department functions in-formally through the local press, through lectures outside the University f,rounds and so forth. A brief summary of the work accomplished this pre-ceding year (1933-34) will be presented in the following pages :- I. The Journal of Modern Education.. Completing its seventh year, the Journal of Modern Education has gained the confidence of a. ftirly wide circle of readers in the Arabic speaking educational world. During the first two years many of our friends in the Ministry of Education often expressed their apprehension that we could not continue the publication on the grounds that purely educational material would soon be exhausted. Gradually these fears vanished through the inexhaustible subjects that have been discussed by the Journal, through the reference books, magazines and publications mentioned, through the rich educational terminology, and through the numberless names of outstand-ing pedagogists, psychologists and other educators all over the world. Apart from our circle of readers the Journal has been mentioned on various occasions by Egyptian and E rian papers and magazines. During the final public examinations of the Ministry of Education, the examination questions were criticised by the editor of Al-imiokattam and the criticism was supported by articles that had appeased in our Journal. "4;uotations and whole articles from our Journal were reproduced by various papers and magazines in Egypt, Palestine and Syria. The Min-istry of Education in Punjab, India, again sent us a publication in which our Journal is recommended to its schools, as the only publication in Arabic there. The Director of the Department of Education of Transjordania sent us a personal letter, appreciating the Journal and promising to in-crease the number of subscribers in his schools." Books on education from America end England, hitherto unknown, to this part Df the world, have been bought by educational authorities as well as individuals, on our rec-ommendation. The external appearance of the issues of this seventh volume has been improved by the selection of a better and more substantial cover and by adding a picture. The pictures have been better selected. A finer type was chosen for the printing - thus allowing for more material and giving a better appearance. l•iore attention has been paid to foot-noting, in order to substantiate the statements made, as well as to acquaint the reader with the educational literature. "Overhalf a dozen articles were contributed by outstanding educationists in Egypt and 'Iraq. A series of articles on Elementary Education (one appearing in each issue) by Dean Galt have been most pertinent and effective and gained popularity in the Egyptian Ministry of Education. For the first time in its history Al Hegaz has read an educational organ by subscribing to our Journal. Through a native of that country, a notice was published in the Mecca daily news-paper. The result was eight subscriptions in the Holy City"
