Dr. Boktor has also maintained throughout the year many extremely important and useful contacts with Government officials and Government educational developments. The Journal of Modern Education, issued by the Department of Edu-cation, has again advanced its subscriptions which now stand at 758. This is a ground for gratification for after all only tie progressive type of teacher is likely to be interested in the magazine and single copies often are read by numerous friends of the actual subscriber. It is significant that 31 per cent of the issue is taken by the Ministry of Education. It is one of our primary objects to influence and stimulate Government educational policy. An earlier section referred to entire sets of the Journal being purchased by officials from Morocco. An index for the first ten years of the Journal has made accessible to subscribers old material of value for special study and research. A special number on the centenary of the Egyptian Ministry of Edu-cation developed wide interest in Government circles a year ago, while this year a special issue on "Reforming the Arabic Language" enabled the Journal to command articles from prominent personalities in Iraq, Palestine as well as Egypt. "When I visited Barakat Pasha in the Parliament (he was formerly Minister of Education," reports Dr. Boktor, "and presented him with six copies, he was extremely grateful and told me that since 1930 he had been reading our Journal regularly and that it was he who, as a consequence of reading our Journal, ordered that the Ministry should publish an educational periodical." It is to be noted that his suggestion was not followed up, but the incident shows the circles we are touching. In conclusion, I should call attention to the need of re-inforcing the staff of this Department, since Dr. Boktor is at present the only full time member. His furlough during one half of 1238-39 creates a critical situation when he has no full time associate. The statistics for the Department during 1937-38 are as follows: Teacher Training: Total enrolled, 43; paying in full, 33; paying in part, 6; on scholarship, 4. The Journal: Paid subscriptions, 657; complimentary, 101; total, 758. (last, year 712) . Psying subscribers in Egypt, 428; in Irae:,, 81; in Palestine, 74; in Hedjaz, 25; in Syria and Lebanon, 22; in the Sudan, 14; in Trans-jordania, 4; in Morocco, 3; two each in Sumatra, Aden and Kelantan. V. GENERAL UNIVERSITY MATTERS. (1) The Staff: During 1937-38, the University felt particularly short-handed, as Dean Galt was absent on furlough for the entire year and Drs. McClenahan and Jeffery were absent one half year each. Where the chief ad-ministrator of an entire school such as its Dean, is absent on furlough, it is particularly difficult to fill his place. On the other hand the work enjoyed certain reinforcements. Mr. Howard returned from furlough, thus strengthening the English Department.
