IV. FACULTY O. EDUCATION Here again we make use of the recently approved nomenclature of Faculty in-stead of Department. Its activities continue to be divided into two sections - Classes and the Journal of Modern Education. Classes: Again a slight increase in student enrollment is registered: 72 as against 69 last year. These represent 11 different nationalities and 7 different religious affiliations. The wide outreach of influence is seen by noting some of the institutions in which some of these students are employed as teachers. There are, among others, students who are employed in Government Schools, such as the Girl's College at Zamalek, the Institute of Education for Women, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Agriculture. Many others represent private or relig-ious community schools such as the English Mission College, the Greek Community School, the Coptic College, the College des Freres (Jesuit) and others. Dr. Boktor, Chairman of the Faculty, gives in his Report many illustrations showing the important posts taken by our graduates. Three of our graduates were among the members of the Egyptian Mission sent to Ethiopia by the Ministry of Edu-cation, one being sub-Director of the Mission. More recent word tells of our grad-uates there being charged with the task of broadcasting "cultural talks" weekly in addition to their work of preparing teachers for Ethioljian schools. Here I would re-emphasize the urgent need of strengthening the Faculty by an additional American permanent man. A one-mau faculty is not really worthy of our University even though reenforced by special lecturers from other departments and it is a constant embarrassment when the only man must go on, furlough. The journal of Modern Education: Here again au advance is shown both in sub-scriptions and in income. The war nas been a hindrance only in means of communica-tions with other areas and in poor mailing services. Demands for back numbers are a real problem. For example, the newly established Faruk I. University is calling for a complete set from the beginning. re a c/, The outbreak of this Journal (which is wholly in Arabic) is often quite sur-prising. I quote.. the following from Dr. Boktor' s Report: "The Hejaz (Arabia) has some of our most enthusiastic subscribers, two of whom are royal princes. They pay promptly, write us excellent letters and respond splen-didly to the various articles. From Mecca, two months ago, a. venerable Sheikh with his 'Ikal' and flowing robes, paid a special visit to our office and asked for certain back numbers. I was amazed to hear him discussing. certain articles that appeared in our Journal and which I had thoughtwere far removed from the level of education of Hejaz and its milieu as a whole. The Sheikh explained that they have a club at Mecca in which enlightened citizens meet, read and discuss what they read. According to him, foremost among other literary material, is our Journal. Had he not mentioned titles of different articles going back to many years past, as if he learned them by heart, and had he not asked questions and dis-cussed certain topics on psychology and education connected with those articles, I would have thought that he was just flattering us."
