This classification does not include the individuals who attend the meet-ings with single tickets in cinema and with invitations in lectures; also it does not include the subscribers in the English lectures. Publicit: In view of the limitation of the newspapers to six pages by Military Law, and the large space devoted to war news, there was no place in the daily press for publishing lectures in full. However, the Arabic press published summaries of 11 lectures and commented on six lectures. The Egyptian Gazette (English daily) published summaries of two lectures, the French press one. Thanks to the Social Welfare Magazine, which prints 5000 copies monthly, 15 lectures and forums were published in full in its various issues. Three lectures and forums were published in other magazines. A much wider circle was reached by the radio, as 14 lectures and forums were broadcast to the Arabic speaking world. This year we were fortunate in having; such a wide publicity for our programs. Literature: Appendix DTI gives details of the pamphlets and magazines distri-buted this year, amounting to 577e pieces. The Ministry of Social welfare supplied us monthly with 300 copies of its issues. The distribution of the magazine to the subscribers in the lecture program led to an increase in our constituency. The public is eager to have the lectures and forums printed in book form. I think a contribution could be secured from Egyptian notables for this purpose. If this suggestion meets with the approval of the Director, a campaign could be started early in November next. Extension Programs and Public Opinion: In the preceding pages, the extent to which Extension message carried has been estimated by the total number in attendance, the number of lectures and forums published in the press .und the number of 1ctures broadcast. However, it is important to find out whether it has had any influence on the public mind, if it affected any change in the atti-tude of the people towards social problems. Although we have no accurate means to measure the contribution of Extension programs, we may have an idea of Extension influence from the following evidences: 1. Many of the lecturers expressed in their addresses the important role that the Division of Extension played in the life of the country. Tewfik Pasha Doss, the ex-Minister of Communications and at present member of Parliament in the introduction of his lecture said: "I wish to thank the American University for its interest in Egypt's social problems, in addition to its interest in education and teach-ing.... (and) opening the door of its institution for the study of Egypt's general conditions, improving its culture and promoting its mental standard. "Our thanks are doubled when we know that as soon as the Ministry of Social Welfare was established, this University very kindly volunteered to become one of the Ministry's instruments for reconstruction. It cooperated with the Ministry in organizing series of lectures to deal with social problems. These lectures are given by a selected group of the best speakers and most able thinkers who come to the platform to exhibit the different problems of our national life and try to prescribe the right treatment for Egypt's social. diseases.
