34 Extension Work With regard to the lectures given by Mrs. Devonshire and Mr. Schwartz, an admission fee was charged which not only paid the expenses of the meetings and the lectures''fees but in addition added a small profit for the Division. The series given by Mrs. Devonshire was a repetition of the series given a year previously by her on "Moslem Builders of Cairo ", except that the latter series was in French. The lantern was used effective-ly with slides of the monuments of Cairo. The musical lecture of Mr. Schwartz attracted considerable attention, the assembly hall being crowded, It was given late in the afternoon and was almost exclusively attended by students of different mission schools, both boys and girls, in Cairo. It was so well received that it seems that there may be a field for this sort of entertain-ment for students, yet to be developed. Mr. Schwartz lectured in English. The .Lectures given by Dr. Fakhry in Cairo and Tanta were all in Arabic. In Cairo the experiment was tried of selling the tickets for a nominal sum which entitled the holder to enter long enough before the lecture began to find a seat. Five minutes before the opening of the lecture the doors opened to the public generally. In this way most of the tickets .vaere sold and enough money realized to pay for their printing. The income was ii/E.7.86. The subject of the Cairo series was "Sexual Hygiene and Public Health", the first lecture being in connection with the film, "The Gift. of Life". In Tanta, four lectures were given, the first one being the film "The Gift of Life" and the other three by Dr. Fakhry. The lectures were held on four successive Friday afternoons at five o' clock during February and March. Thanks to the generous cooperation of the sub Modir, we were able to secure the Municipal Theater for the series. The Police Department also was very generous in sending officers each time, and, as events proved, they were very necessary. Most of the preliminary arrangements were made by Dr. H. S. Hutchison of the American Mission Hospital, whom we can not thank enough for the success of the series. This first series given outside of Cairo would seem to indicate that there is a great field for Extension work in the provinces. The people seem to have very little in the way of public gatherings to attend. They fairly rushed the Tanta meetings. At the conclusion of both series, a questionaire was distributed which the men were asked to fill in anonymously and mail to Dr. Fakhry, the point being to get sor;1e information as to the sex life of the men of Egypt. Dr. Fakhry has been studying these c,uestionanres carefully and is writing an article embodying the results of his research. At the beginning of June, in response to a general appeal made by Russell Pasha, commandant of police in Cairo, that schools should en-deavour to make known the effects of narcotics, we arranged a public lecture to be giver by Dr. Fakhry under the chairmanship of Russell Pasha, The invitations to this lecture were confined to police and other Government officials as well as teachers of Government schools and a certain number of medical men. Though the attendance was not large, it is felt that some very important persons were reached. Russell Pasha has agreed that the lecture should be published for as wide reading s possible. Dr. John F. Downey of the University of Minnesota being in the country on a visit, was asked to give us his popular lecture on "Recent Progress in Astronomy". The lecture was in English and was free. There was a good attendance though not large and the audience seemed very appreciative not only of the facts given by Dr. Downey, but also of the inspiring inter-pretation of these facts. Numbers of the people remained to discuss the subject with Dr. Downey at the conclusion of the lecture. With regard to "The Gift of Life", during the early months of the year the titles were translated into Arabic and put into the film so that they now show in both English and Arabic.
