J - Comment Lecture Course: It was thought in the fall that all the lectures could be given in the new auditorium after Jan. 1, but the delays in finish-ing the building, necessitated holding all but six in the old Assembly Hall. This cut down the attendance very much for the more popular of the lectures and crowded the room badly. The course was largely under the direction of Dr. William Selim Hanna of the Royal school of Engineering, who gave nine hours a week from his free time for this work. This being our first general course of lectures, we decided to experiment on subject matter to test the tastes of the Egyptian public by offering some variety.. The publicity was carefully planned and carried out and people were- asked to select the courses on which they wanted further information and perhaps tickets. Exact records of attendance have been kept, so that we can measure the interest of the public for future guidance. The subjects which took best were Dr. Fakhry's two courses for men and women (separately) on Social Hygiene - average attendance, 416 - and Miss May Ziade's Lectures on the Progress of the Egyptian Woman, for which the average attendance was 643. The latter lectures were two, open for both sexes. For Dr. Fakhry's three lectures to women, e. Committee of patronesses, con-sisting of seven Egyptian women, Christian and Moslem, and three American, was secured to criticise the plans, issue the invitations and preside at the meetings. This vas a very valuable move as the judgment Lrd help of these ladies proved of the utmost good for the lectures and the prestige of the Division. The Committee had two meetings, the second including a private showing of the Science of Life film, with which they were very much pleased. Moving Pictures: "The Gift of Life" was used mainly and attracted crowds of students which taxed the capacity of the Assembly Hall. Mr. Jean K_elzi was secured for tvuo hours a day to promote these exhibitions. Besides showing the film to students of 38 Cairo schools, it was taken on three differ-ent occasions to other places, twice to the Boys' Reformatory at Giza, and once to Tanta under the auspices of the Young Men's Club of the American Mission. One other attempt to show it at the Girls' Reformatory resulted in damage to the lighting apparatus and the picture was not a success. This picture has been shown to practically all of the present generation of Cairo secondary students. After a few years it can be revived. The "Science of Life" film was kept to be shown chiefly in Ewart ball, where conditions would be better and audiences larger. It was exhibited three times only, once to 8. woman's audience. Next it will be our moving picture feature in the new Hall. Since we introduced the "Gift of Life" to Cairo, other schools have adopted the cinema and other educytional films have been brought in. However, these two films remain unique in Egypt. Child Welfare Center: Thanks to Mrs. McClenahan's detailed supervision and hard work, and the help of other members of the Committee, the Welfare work has progressed. We suffered a severe loss in the death of our head nurse, Miss Wright at the end of May from diphtheria. She vas devoted to the work and loved by all the patients, her kindly Christian spirit giving character to the whole place. We have also had the invaluable services of four Egypt-ian doctors, who have benerously given two hours a week each - Dr. Fakhry for venereal treatments, Dr. Khalid for eyes, and Drs. Naseef and Fareed dividing the time for children's ailments. The effects of the health lessons, mad
