206 Division of Extension Page 6. from 5 to 8 o'clock at the School of Medicine, and instruction has been given by members of the faculties of the Egyptian University, officials of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Health and a few other specialists from outside the Government. The Director of the Division of Extension gave 14 lectures on "Sociology for Egyptians" during the April-June term. In addition to class work, practical work for three months is required in order to qualify for the diploma. This, it is hoped, will be given under the approval of the Ministry of Education after a special examination, and thus a new profession of "qualified social worker" will spring up in Egypt. The interest of the Egyptian Government in this project has been evidenced by a subvention of L.E.200 from the Ministry of Education, and by the active support of the Governor of Cairo and the Labour Department. Great credit for its success is due to the Dean, Mrs. Bertha Fahrny, a graduate of the Simmons College School of Social Work, Boston. The School is still in its infancy, but is withal a lusty infant. 2. A Survey of the Causes of Poverty in Egypt is being undertaken by the Association, which is raising funds for it privately. The Director of the Division of Extension has been asked to direct the Survey which will take place during the months of July, 1938, to April, 1939, and the Council of the University has granted permission for the Director to give two days per week for this purpose. The principal aim of the Survey is to discover from a study of some 5000 families in both the cities and the villages, exactly how they make ends meet and what their standard of living is. A secondary purpose of the Survey is to give experience to the students of the School of Social Work in practical field studies. Shazli Pasha, the Governor of Cairo, is acting as an honorary chairman of the General Com-mittee for the Survey. It is hoped that the next Annual Report will contain something definite as to the results. The Extension Board: The Extension Board has consisted of the President of the University, Dr. McCienahan, Dr. Boktor and Mr. Fouad Sarruf. The Board has met twice during the year, the meetings taking place at such times as to approve general policies, which have then been executed by the Staff. In conclusion, the Director wishes to testify to the splendid spirit of cooperation of the past year not only on the part of those who have volunteered to lecture, usher, and do committee work, but especially on the part of the members of the Staff, Messrs.
