Attendance at Extension lectures and movies and other public meetings numbered 66071, and attendance at lectures of the School of Oriental Studies was approximately 500. Other public functions included six plays under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and one under the Division of Extension for the benefit of Egyptian soldiers. The Journal of Modern Education had a subscription list of 1487 of whom 80 received complimentary copies. Furthermore, Ewart Memorial Hall is a very busy institution and is greatly in demand by the public for lectures, concerts, and certain official functions. On two o^casions it was loaned to the Ministry of Social Affairs in connection with their program of land distribution to the fellaheen. The personal participation of staff members in local church activities in Cairo and Maadi, in Rotary and in certain governmental commissions gives AUC strength as a contributor to the needs of the local and national communities. The cordiality of officialdom, local and area, is noteworthy. President Naguib received me twice and attended the Commencement exercises as well as the Arab language day program. Cabinet members lectured under our auspices and participated with other distinguished Egyptians on advisory committees for the Division of Extension and the Social Research Center. Another hopeful sign was the tacit recognition of our degrees by the admission to the Institute of Political Science of the Cairo University of two more o:C our graduates (total now six), and also by the Ministry of Education in equating the salaries paid to its holders at the same level as the graduates of the state universities. The opening of the Social Research Center with a Ford grant has added greatly to the University's prestige. If a university is measured by the quality of its product, then AUC can take considerable satisfaction. Our largest class was graduated this year with 84 receiving bachelor's degrees and one a Master of Arts. At the current rate of demand for admission to the Freshman class and limiting the number to 155 (this past year it was 152), the registration in the Faculty of. Arts and Sciences would approximate 515 in 1956-57. Applications for the adult student programs are following a similar course. The stability of our operation with practically no political interruptions and the personal attention given the students, cause many leading families to enroll their sons and daughters with us rather than in the state universities. The achievements of our alumni are also an indication of our success over the past third of a century. Among alumni are included those holding our secondary certificates (888) as well as our degrees (670), and these graduates are scattered throughout the Middle East as well as serving in Europe and the Americas. The most outstanding perhaps is Dr. Mohammed Tewfiq Younes of our first class, 1923, who is now Auditor General of the Egyptian Government, after having been for some years an under-secretary in the Ministry of Finance. He has the rank of minister. He has always remained a very loyal friend, and honored us by being our Commencement speaker this year. Others are found as diplomats, political leaders, owners, editors and correspondents of local newspapers and international journals, as radio news-casters, members of the medical, legal and teaching professions, successful estate owners and business men, not to mention fathers and mothers of charming families. The gracious hostess of the Egyptian Embassy in Washington is an alumna, as well as the wife of the Ambassador of Israel to the United States. We have graduates also as members of staffs of the United Nations and its auxiliary agencies. Our degree holders have been particularly successful as candidates for advanced degrees An the great universities of Europe and the United. States, and several of them have made impressive records. One, Dr. Pierre Caccia, teaches in Edinburgh University. Another, Fr. Makary el Souriani. a B.A. in Education, has become a Coptic monk and is exerting great influence in improving the quality of the priesthood. He was a delegate to the World Council of Churches at Evanston, and this coming academic year will be a graduate student in religious education at Princeton Theological Seminary. Another, Hanna Rizk, the Director of our Division of Extension, has been appointed Executive Secretary of an Egyptian government commission on population studies. One hopeful sign is that a steadily increasing number of the alumni are making contributions to University funds. This area of alumni cultivation is open to further improvement. The increasing demand for the courses of the School of Oriental Studies should also be noted, especially the interest of the great oil companies.
