• 8 r -9 - School of Oriental Studies This year was outstanding in the history of the School of Oriental Studies, marking not only an amplified program but also the beginning of a more pro-fessional development long desired. The addition of two well-qualified Re-search scholars (Drs. Schoonover and Abdel Malek) gave the sohool both reputation and needed soholarly resources. As aoting administrator, IIr. Book brought im-agination and enthusiasm to his tasks, and revised the admistrative procedures for more efficiency and effectiveness. The revised and expanded language curriculum planned last year was put into operation. Because of the larger permanent staff, it was possible to give greater individual guidance to pupils and language instructors. The result was better work, better interest on the part of students, and enhanced reputation. To meet the demand for beginning instruction in classical Arabic, a special Classical sequence was designed, in which the student addresses himself directly to the written language, without first acgx firing a knowledge of Egyptian colloquial. An important new feature of the work was the series of weekly seminars for speoialized students. These covered Advanced Hebrew, Beginning Syriao and the language of the Arabic press. By thus enriching and broadening its language instruction, the school is substantiating its claim to be a center of Semitic studios - the only such center in Egypt. The program of public lectures was unusually varied, and brohght a favorable public response. During the first semester five lectures were given on the topic "History of the Caliphate." In the second semester a variety of topics were covered, including "Political Parties in Egypt," "Techniques of Improving the Condition of the Fellaheen," "Religious Minorities in the Middle East," "The Family and the Shar'a Law," and "Significant Points in Islamic Theology." In re-establishing the lecture program, Mr. Beck is carrying the school forward to its original purpose of being a center of Islamic, as well as of Arabic language instruction. Because of this enlarged program, and a number of inquiries from graduate students in America and England, the Administrative Faoulty oonsidored carefully the possibility of offering an CA. degree for students whose mother tongue is not one of the Semitic languages. After a thorough investigation of the matter, a plan was presented to Council which was accepted and now awaits Trustee action.
