School of Oriental Studies As pointed out in my Report last year, the work of this School logically falls under four headings: (1) Language Study; (2) Islamics; (3) Research; (4) Extension or General bervices. Language teaching has gone apace and practically all of the 106 students enrolled came for the study of Arabic. Forty-one of these were missionaries; the rest came from business, government or other circles. Dean McClenahan's Report discusses the problem involved in this shift from a constituency almost totally missionary to one that is now sixty per cent non-missionary. Islamics have been offered for study in indirect form rather than in formal and direct form, as a group of foreign missionaries (10-15) have met to discuss the practical implications of the presentation of. Christianity to Mos-lems. Also a second group of young Egyptian workers (12-18) have met to dis-cuss their problems in dealing with Moslems. Research work has been carried forward by Lr. Jeffery along the lines reported a year ago. The Extension activities of the School took the form of nine public lect-ures averaging an attendance of 180, as against 140 last year. These lectures dealt either with the past history of Islam or with present day conditions in Egypt, and were intended to help orient the man or woman who expects to live and work in Egypt. In all these activities tie School once again received services, gener-ous and free, from persons outside the regular staff of the school; From Dr. Elder in the supervision of classes in arabic, from Mr. 1orrisori in the Islamic study groups, and from Lr. Enderlin in the enrolling and placing of students, as Dr. Jeffery, was absent in America on half year furlough for the second half of the year, but in the first half taught from six to eight periods a week in addition to lectures on Islamics. Dr. Jeffery's resignation is to become effective January 1933, when he accepts an invitation to the staff of Columbia University which offers him a chance to puruse his research work for a critical Commentary on the Koran and provides him with leisure for such work and a wealth of equipment such as the School of Oriental Studies at Cairo could not hope to rival. His loss will be very severely felt both in the work of the School and still more in the prestige it had gained among European scholars. Much correspondence has already been carried on in a search for his successor, but his withdrawal has involved also a restudy of the object and function of the School to discover now the 'School might fulfil its functions more effectively. The original plan for the chool may be inferred from the name first sug-gested for it, "Christian ochool of Religion". Under this conception everything rec,uired by the Christian missionary or by the Christian missionary enterprise in the line of teaching, study and research was to be provided. Especially was it proposed to give instruction in the language required (chiefly Arabic); to this would be added courses in Islamics; to this would be added courses on the Christian religion and its practical presentation to a Moslem mind and world.
