iss Appendix A Schedule B REPORT of the School of Oriental Studies for 1928-29 The total enrolment for the Academic year has been eighty students, distributed as follows:- American Mission 11 Egypt General Mission 6 Church Missionary Society 21 American University 8 Nile Mission Press 2 Danish Mission 2 Nile Valley Evangelistic Campaign 5 Friends of Arabia Mission 4 Seventh Day Adventist mission 1 Canadian Holiness fission 1 Apostolic Asselablies 1 Unattached 18 The students represented nine nationalities - Americans 28; British 41; Danish 2; German 1; Armenian 2; Dutch 1; Swiss 1; Beligan 1; Italian 3. The Staff has been the same as last year and the Arabic Courses have followed the sate programme as for the 1r}st two years. The change here has been twofold. In the first place, instead of being packed in on Friday afternoons, the Islamic courses have been distributed over the afternoons of the week, which has made it possible to do more work on each course and to distribute the work better. Secondly, tue material of the courses has been largely changed in order to make the subject less academic and relate it more to the actual life of the Missionary in a Muslim environment. This involved the introduction of two entirely new courses, one on the Modern History and Present Constitution of Egypt, and another on the Beliefs, Customs and Superstitions of the Fellahin. The first course was caref for b, Air. Elder, with assistance from Dr. Alexander on the question of the relations between Missions and the G..svernment, and from judge Booth on the Judicial system of the country. The second was given by mr. George Swan of the Egypt General Mission. This year we have had an unusually large number of Orientalists visiting the School, some of whom studied with us. Sir Dennison Ross, the Director of the London School of Oriental Studies, lectured to us on Persian Literature, while in Cairo on his way to Persia, and Prof. Margoliouth of oxford, who was here for a week on his return journey from India, spoke to us about the changing conditions in that country. rrof.
