SCHUUL UF URIEN TAL STUDIES It seems incredible that with missionary recruits reduced to seven, this branch of our work which was established particularly for the training of mission-aries, should be able to report the nighest total enrollment the School has ever had in its entire history, 256 as against 22U last year. The explanation lies in our service to the troops, 75 enrolling from the American forces and 139 from the British. It is to be recognized that the great majority of the courses taken have been either very popular and superficial or else very specialized. One course of 12 lessons was arranged for 64 American Bien with the hearty cooperation of the edu-cation authorities of the American Army. Another course of a very special charac-ter was arranged for 65 British officers who were to have charge of the administra-tion of Occupied Enemy Territory in Tripolitania. After a country is conquered, there develops the problem of governing it and we may hope that such courses as we offered would help to remove friction due to linguistic differences in the countries thus occupied. The search continues for a qualified associate for Dr. Adams, who is Dean and only full time American on the Faculty of the S.U.S. A hopeful lead has led to disappointment after a year's correspondence, as the person in question could not be spared from his own present field. It is a matter of real regret that the first and only candidate for the M.A. degree which the University has had, died quite unexpectedly of typhus. He was a Moslem student, an Albanian, had graduated with our Faculty of Arts and Sci-ences taking the B.A. degree, and wished to qualify for an M.A. degree in the field of Islamics. Une wonuers what might have been nis future influences in Moslem circles had he lived to achieve the influence of a great and liberal Moslem author-ity. Dr. Adams has carried a heavy burden this past year, not only acting as Dean and administrator of the School, but also doing considerable teaching and re-sponding to many calls for special lectures particularly for the military forces in Egypt. Furthermore his furlough is overdue. Hence the need to restore the staff to normal, so that when travel opens up there will be some one to tare charge in his absence. The basic text book for many years in the study of colloquial Arabic has been that prepared by Canon Gairdner. A revision, projected for some time, has now been finished largely through Dr. Elder and the revised book is now in the press. The exhaustion of the old edition and the demands of the military forces made ur-gent the printing of the new manual at the time in spite of high costs
