279 REPORT OF THE S.O.S. 1924-25. ENROLMENT:- Eighty-five students have taken lessons for longer or shorter periods during the year, about half of them taking full time. They are distributed ac-cording to organizations:- STAFF:- American Mission 23 Church Missionary Society 18 American University 15 Egypt General Mission 1 Unattached Y.M.C.A.. 6 N.V.E.C. 4 Seventh Day Adv. 1 Pentecostal Assembly 1 16. This has remained unchanged during the year. Canon Gairdner took a group in Phonetics early in the year but has done no other teaching. Mr. Elder has continued to direct the work of the institution and supervise the teaching. and has himself taken most of the grammatical work with the senior classes. The permanent Egyptian staff has been the same as last year, but there have been some temporary teachers right through the winter, with the object of preparing them for better work in classes. Canon Gairdner and Mr. Adams have again render-ed invaluable service at the Examinations. PUf3LICATIONS:- The final proofs of Canon Gairdner's Handbook of Arabic Phonetics were corrected some onths ago, and as soon as the blocks for the illustrations are finished, the printer will begin to strike off the work, so that it should be ready for use when we commence work again in September. The stocks of the present edition of the Colloquial Grammar are quite exhausted, and Canon Gairdner and Mr. Elder have been working at the new edition. It is planned to have the proof sheets of the first lessons finished this summer so that classes commencing next November may have these to begin on, and the whole new edition ought to be ready in proof sheet form by the end of that academic year. Plans have been discussed, but have not matured, for printing in pam-phlet form, some of the material used for the Islamics courses. A beginning in this direction was made this year by multigraphing the Syllabus on Sufiism and the Dervish Orders for Mr. Swan's classes. ISLAMICS:- Much the same courses were planned as for previous years. While Dr. Zwemer was in Cairo he gave a course of Lectures of the Presentation of Christian-ity to Muslims, and while awaiting his arrival, the Committee arranged a course of lectures on the History of the different Missions working in Egypt, and a course illustrating the problems of the different types of mission work in which thestudents will later be engaged. In these courses we had the invaluable assistance of Missionaries from the different Missions, who came along week after week to give out of their rich experience and wide knowledge of local conditions, inforwtion and advice to the young Missionaries studying with us
