The School has featured in the past public lectures on topics set-ting forth the conditions of life and work in Egypt which are often a perplexity to foreigners in general and missionaries in particular. This year owing to the absences of Dr. Jeffery and of Dr. McClenahan for several months during the year, these lectures were not organized, but Dr. Jeffery; gave to a more intimate circle discussions on such Islamic themes as the Koran, the Traditions, Mohammedan Law and Theology, Ghazzali on Believers, the Seven Readings of the Koran, Ishtar Worship at Mecca and Marriage. Dr. Enderlin's services during the past year have been doubly apprec-iated in tnat in addition to his teaching work he carried the administrative responsibilities of the School during a difficult period when both Dr. Jeffery and Dr. McClenahan were absent. It is a real regret that his withdrawal from the work becomes effective in April 1939, when he is to go home on furlough, after which his Society wishes him to devote himself wholly to writing. are still hoping that some way may be found whereby he may maintain some relationship with the School of Oriental Studies, if for no other purpose than to assist in mediating between the School and its German speaking students. Next year the School expects to have on its staff, as successor to Dr. Jeffery, the Rev. Alexander T. Gordon, a Scotchman, attached to the Episcopal Church, highly recommended by both his Edinburgh University and Oxford University professors, as also by his ecclesiastical associates. The following are the statistics of the School for 1937-38: Enrolment Statistics: (Based on Bursar's Report): Church Missionary Society, 12; Egypt General Mission, 9; American Mission, 5; German Mission, 4; American University, 4; other missionaries, 13; total from missionary socie-ties, 47; government officials, 13; business firms, 16; private individuals, 30. Grand Total, 106. III. DIVISION OF EXTENSION. The activities of the Division of Extension in educating the public have received wide commendation. Reference to this has already been made in the introducting to this Report. Nevertheless there is increasing competition in holding the attention of the public because of the great increase in such lectures as the country becomes more and more modern-ized. In his Report, Dr. Cleland refers to no less than 631 lectures other than our own which were advertized in the public press, where former-ly ours stood almost alone. On some days, as many as four were scheduled. It is curious to note that more than one half of such public lectures were religious, showing how religiously minded the Orient still is. It is no small achievement to be able to report 56 public meetings with an attend-ance of 18,081 held under our own auspices.
