Watson American University at Cairo Cairo My dear President Watson: Permit me to present herewith the report for the School of Oriental Studies for the year ending d une 30, 1937. I. THE STAFF The teaching staff has consisted of Dr. Jeffery (first half of the School year), Dr. Elder, Dr. Enderlin and myself, five sheikhs and three English-speaking effendis. Dr. Jeffery taught from six to eight periods a week in Classical Arabic text and grammar, with some lectures in J'slamics. Dr. Elder taught four per-iods a week in Arabic Grammar and Phonetics, and Dr. Enderlin five periods a week in Nubian and three or four in Colloquial Arabic. For ray own teaching, I did not follow regularly through the year a programme of weekly appointments, but carried classes practically all the year as seemed to be necessary for in-dividual students or groups, in order to form a link between their instruction by Egyptian teachers and their introduction to beginning Arabic. Experience has proven that this kind of special coaching has very considerable value. My other duties have pertained to extra-mural relationships for the University and the School of Oriental Studies with the public. Very frequent individual con-ferences with missionary students concerning their own preparation and with other candidates of the School of Oriental Studies, enrollment of new students, and interviews with officials and others, have filled up this latter portion of my time. II. ENB,OLLNIE NT As was indicated in the report of last year, the enrollment of the School of Oriental Studies has been shifting very much from what it was formerly. The large increase has come from non-missionary sources, and this has called for at-tention to the details of the reciuireme nt s, especially in the Collocuial. Most of these non-missionary students are asking only for Arabic of a very practical character, rather than preparation for examinations or for work continuing over two or three years as formerly. Among these, however, have been a number of candidates from the National Bank of Egypt and the Shell Oil Company and one or two other sources, who have undertaken full courses and preparation for examin-ations, at least in Parts I to III. The enrollment from certain missionary so-cieties has kept up well, notably the German Mission, the Church Missionary Society, and the Egypt General Mission. The total enrollment for the school year was 106; of these 41 (38.70 were missionaries, 17 (16%) were engaged in private business, 7 (6.6%) were from the medical and nursing professions (non-missionary), 15 (14.1%) from the Ministry of Education, 7 (6.6%) were independent students from Europe and Egypt, 3 (2.8%) were from the British A rpy, 3 (2.8%) from the National Bank of Egypt and 12 (11.3%) others
