The following table compares the average attendance in the last four years: Average Attendance Year at Lectures. 1937-38 263 1938-39 269 1939-40 338 1940-41 373 In my report of last year, the advantages and disadvantages of having our lectures program conducted under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Welfare were pointed out. This is the second year of the experiment and therefore an analysis of the Ministry's contribution may help us to decide whether it is wise to maintain the same kind of cooperation. The Ministry did not offer any ideas in making up the program. We were asked to draw a program and submit it for their approval. The first term program was approved with one exception with regard to a lecture on the Wakfs by Tewfik Pasha Doss. They objected to having a Christian deal with a subject which mainly con-cerned Moslems. It was explained to the Ministry that our traditional policy was to invite lecturers regardless of their religions and that the Wakfs was a problem which interested all Egyptians. However, we were compelled to change the topic of the lecture. In the matter of publicity the Ministry has made no contri-bution and we had to carry the whole burden. Several members of the political parties, especially the Wafd, refused to cooperate in a program supervised by an organ of the Government, to which they were opposed. The Ministry's contribution was mainly in providing a Chairman at every other lecture. Perhaps if it were not for the cooperation of the Ministry, we would not have had as many as nine lectures published in the Ministry's magazine, and 9 lectures broadcast from the lecture program alone. .furthermore, the Ministry donated 300 copies of its magazine each month for distribution to the subscribers in the lecture program. The gift encouraged quite a number of this year's subscribers, not only to obtain a season ticket, but also to attend the program. In case a decision is made not to give the lectures in the future under the auspices of the Ministry, the matter should be handled with great care so that we may not lose these advantages. 2. Lectures conducted jointly with other organizations: Our cooperation with the Ministry of Social Welfare in the regular lecture program did not prevent us from cooperating with other organizations in conducting conferences, debates and dramatic performances which serve our purpose. In order to avoid conflict be-tween the different programs, Friday was reserved exclusively for the regular public lectures. Other programs were scheduled for Saturdays or Thursdays. In cooperating with the different organizations, we provided the hall, took charge of publicity, distribution of invitations and control of admission. Their share was to provide the speakers. The subject of the lectures or debates were agreed upon between us. This year we had joint programs with three different organizations
