The suid ►er issue, which was suspended for two years, owing to limit-ation of funds, has been reinstated. Following the recommendation of the President, the next year's summer issue will deal with the question of & selected list of books for library use in Egyptian Schools and abroad. The Journal has, of course, its limitations. A very serious one is the meagre number of issues printed annually - a matter which affects the sub-scriber materially, as far as continuit3 of interest is concerned. We con-stantly receive written and verbal references to this cuestion from our read-ers. But it is immature to recommend an increase of issues, as the latter re-quires time and expense which we cannot afford at present. Another limitation which fortunately is slowly decreasing is the lack of interest in education as a science or art, on the part of teacher& and others engaged in education. This is due to ignorance on the one hand : nd the stagnant system of education on the other. It would not be boasting too much if we say that the few awakenings in the educational circles have been ccused in the main by the stirring and stimulating challenges in the Journal as well as in other activities of the American University at Cairo. The more elastic the systeh, becomes, the more felt need a:.►ong teachers there will be, a.s to methods and philosophy of education, and the wider the circulation of the Journal. This last year the editors have been under a spell of fear least the income of the Journal will be considerably reduced owing to the cloud of sus-picion that seemed to encircle our institution. More than one newspaper had specifically intimidated contributors to the Joura . For some time we were under the apprehension that the Ministry of Education will not continue its subscriptions which constitute about 20% of our income. Fortunately , our fears were shattered by the Ministry's renewal of its subscriptions. The only loss we suffered because of these suspicions was the discontinuation of a few sub-scriptions in Palestine and Egypt. Paying subscribers for this preceding year were as follows:- EQ pt 315 The Sudan 14 Iraq 55 Hegaz (Mecca) 8 Palestine 47 Trans j ordania. 3 Syria. 15 Tripoli 1 TOTAL : 458 In addition to these there are some 120 honorary subscribers. Without mentioning in details the distribution of these gifures, it will be appropriate to refer to the following facts:- (a) The Ministry of Education in Egypt subscribes for 16 copies. (b) Other Government departments in Egypt subscribe for 40 copies. (c) There are more subscribers on the higher level of education in Egypt than on the lower. To be more specific, the ratio between subscribers engaged in higher education and those among secondary, dnd primary education is approx-imately 4:6:4. (d) The Ministry of Education in Iraq subscribes for 19 copies. (e) The Department of Education in Palestine subscribes for 12 copies. (f) The Sudan Government subscribes for 13 copies
