It was our first opportunity to view all the new teams for this year, including our own Magrath Zeniths. Many emotions were in the air, the agony of defeat, and the sweet sound of victory. Our Zeniths played exceptionally well throughout the entire tournament, they were good sportsmen and made our school proud. They received second, losing to the Raymond Comets in the final game. They played their hardest, but the Comets came out on top winning the tournament. C.C.H.S. took the third place trophy defeating Kainai in the play offs. Cardstonjvas awarded the sportsmanship trophy, and Skousan Harker was awarded the tournament MVP award. We'd like to thank all the organizers of the tournament and the volunteers for making things go so smoothly. Congratulations to all the players. A A A A A A A MAGRATH JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL The Magrath Junior High Basketball league started this past week with the Magrath Grade 7, 8 and 9 boys all recording victories over Cardston while the Grade 7, 8 and 9 girls lost. Grade 9's won 55-35, with Joseph Johnson getting 21 points and Wes Gurney adding 10. Grade 8’s won their game 71-46, with Andy Beres 16 points, Greg Bourne 13 points, Brad Also of note Joel Heath had a super 9 rebounds! Grade 7's won 36-32 with Darren Balderson and Mat Alston scoring 12 points each. No scores were available for the girls teams. ******* MAGRATH HOCKEY NEWS Tadpoles: For the Tadpole game Saturday, Dec. 4th, it was Magrath over Raymond 10-7. Goals were as follows: Layne Gill - 2 goals - 1 assist; Brady Mehew - 1 goal - 2 assists; Anthony Haynes - 3 goals - 1 assist; John Rudd 1 goal - 1 assist; Cole Barnett - 2 goals - 3 assists; Russell Ririe - 1 goal - 2 assists; Todd Brandham - 2 assists; Shawn Ragan - 2 assists; Russell Yoshihara - 2 assists. They had a shaky first period, but managed to come out on top. Great job guys! Novice Hawks: On Friday Nov. 26th, we played Raymond in an exhibition game. This was our first game playing on the fly (no 3min buzzer). Raymond used this to their advantage and came out with a 7-2 victory. Denver Wetherelt faced 46 shots in net. Our goal getters were Dustin Mandel & Doug Mehew with assists by Chad Ratke. On Saturday we hosted the Lethbridge Burger King team. Lethbridge managed to come out on top with a 6-4 win. Goals: one each to Denver Wetherelt, Kyle Harker, Cody Ririe & Dustin Mandel. Assists: Peter Lee - 2, one each to Cody Ririe & Denver Wetherelt. We also played a league game on Saturday in Kainai with only 9 players. Registration fees are due January 3rd, 1994 ******* Magrath Community Christmas Concert The Tom Karren Gym was overflowing Monday night when families gathered to enjoy the second annual event. Six choirs and two bands capably performed - 180 participants in all. The gym was filled - organizers could hardly believe so many people turned out in Magrath for something that wasn’t basketball! Your support was most gratifing. Choir leaders and accompanists for the evening included Shirley Clifton, Jerfy Chatwin, Laurel Bennett and Elizabeth Olsen. Accompanists were Gwen Coleman, Sharon Ragan and Alma Davies. Soloists were Cam Atwood and Laurel Bennett. Advertising was handled by Garda Law, lighting by Wayne Kinder and Ushering by Don Johnson. Special thanks to Marie Stevenson, Ann Pilling, Patricia Dudley and an energetic committee who provided very effective decorations. The committee hopes this event might continue yearly, drawing our community together in the Christmas spirit. Thanks to all those who lifted their voices and the members of the different bands for participating. "Why do we have to reduce spending in Health, Education, Social Services and Advanced Education?" I am asked this question a lot. These four departments, which I refer to as the "Big Four" are without doubt the most important areas for government to be involved in. For someone who has a member of their family who is sick, the most important priority is a good helath care system. For somone who has young children in school, the most important priority is Kindergarten to Grade 12. For someone who can't find a job and needs a roof over their head, social services are critical. And for someone planning to attend a university or college to enhance their skills, one of the most important departments is Advanced Education and Career Development. ' These four departments are a priority for the government. Almost 80% of our total revenue pie goes to these four areas. We spend $4 billion on Health (35% of the pie), $1.9 billion on Education (20% of the pie), $1.6 billion on Social Services (14% of the pie) and in my department, we spend $1.2 billion (11% of the pie). Many people have told me that they agree with the government's plan to eliminate our deficit without increasing taxes, but they don't want us to reduce spending in these four areas. . The fact of the matter is that there just isn't enough money in all the other departments combined to meet our deficit reduction plan. If you add the $1.4 billion for our debt servicing costs to the $8.7 billion we spend on the big four, you have $10 billion of our $11.4 billion budget already spent. That's roughly 88% of all the money we take in. So even if we completely eliminated all of the other departments (like environment, agriculture and transportation) we wouldn’t even be close to meeting our target. We have to reduce spending in these areas. And we will take steps toward reductions in these areas very carefully. Our goal is to conduct government business in a new way, where people rely less on government and more on themselves. We want public funds to go to where they are most needed and we want those funds to be spent as wisely as possible. We are committed to reorganizing, deregulating and streamlining government to reflect Albertan's desire for a government as frugal and creative as they have to be in these tough economic times. And so far we are on track. The first stage of our deficit reduction plan to reduce government spending by 20% - or $2.5 billion - in four years is on target. We’ve saved $130 million this year by eliminating waste and duplication in government and we will save more money through MLA pay cuts and the elimination of the MLA pesion plan. . Every department has been working on new ways to cut costs and bring an entrepreneurial management style to public administration. Every department, agency and organization receiving government funds has to develop a three-year business plan outlining its core business and activities. Fiscal management makes a difference. The New York financial firm Standard and Poors downgraded the province of Ontario's rating from double A to double A minus. In their report, they . explained the downgrade as a result of the "weakened resolve of the Ontario government to take unpopular expenditure adjustments in order to meet its deficit targets in 1993-94 as well as the ■ prospect that deficit targets for the succeeding years as outlined in the province's medium term plan will also be missed." We are committed to sticking to our plan.
