Harrington of Lethbridge divides us up this way: Serious Green Doers: These are citizens who have been doing the four R.'s for years, and who participate in whatever recycling program is in their town, Part-Time Green Doers: This is most of us. fe drop off newspapers, but feel washing out cans and plastic containers to be too much of a burden. We buy cardboard milk cartons because they fit better in the refrigerator than the four litre plastic milk jugs. We don't want the plastic pail needed to collect kitchen compositables sitting on the back porch— it is too unsightly. Green Thinkers: These citizens are full of good intentions, but do nothing. They feel that recycling is a good idea and they simply "Must*Do Something". He tells this group to "GET SERIOUS- START NOW!" Green Bananas: You know who you are. You are the ones who think recycling is from the window of your car. You think recycled envelopes should cost you less than virgin white envelopes. You think it is stupid and gauche to take your own bags to the grocery store for packaging. You won't be caught dead packing your own groceries. Most appalling, you cannot see the environmental future damage and factor it to the present. In other words, pay a little more now to protect the future ecological balance. - He tells us; do a little more for the unborn- make your New year's Resolution one for the environment. REMINDER . Our Grade Six Students at Magrath School are collecting Newspapers for recycling. Do your part—Bundle them up and bring them to Mr.Burns Alston's Room. .. .... AÜëmber oF the community opened my eyes the other day. He said, "if you lived in Lethbridge and measured out a four square block area, you 'would probably have the same density of population that we have here in Magrath; now imagine providing that group of citizens, with all of the facilities that are available here in Magrath. Can you imagine bow many recreation complexes there would have to be in Lethbridge?" 1 wonder how willing those citizens would be to accept the tax assessment necessary to maintain those facilities? Unfortunately, with a small tax rase like we have here in Magrath, the percentage each citizen must bear oftentimes seems unreasonable. At present the PARKS AMD RECREATION segment utilizes 21% of our Town's Annual Budget. I spoke with Rob McMurray regarding the different opportunities that are here for the people in Magrath to enjoy to find out exactly where that money was going. First of all, for those of you who do not know Rob: Rob McMurray is employed by the Tom as the Recreation Director and Facilities Manager. Rob was born and educated in Cardston AB. He worked many years as a carpenter, and as a Dairy Plant worker for the Glenwood " Cheese Factory, before deciding to go back to school. He then attended the Lethbridge Community College receiving a Dipolma in the field of Recreation Management. He and his wife Sandy, have 4 children: Girls- Robyn 10; Rebecca ?; Julie 4; and boy- Jon 1 year. P.ob has a love for all sports, as well as for music. He tells ne that he very much enjoys serving the people here in Magrath and plans to live here for many years. For our information, Rob has compiled a rundown of each Recreation Facility and its use. il MAGRATH ARENA "Kost of those using the /arena are the kids in the Minor Hockey Program. There are approximately 90-100 kids in this program, ranging in age from 5-17. Their ice time is usually early evenings. The School often uses the Arena during the day.We have 3 steady Local teams (Senior Mem and 1 out of town Team using up the later Ice Times throughout the week days. _ Other users are from out of Town, usually Looking for Sunday Ice. The majority of the Rentals are Lethbridge Minor Hockey, averaging 2-3 bookings each week. More inside........... Occasionally numbers will reach 100, but the weather and the time of the year will usually predict the outcome. Host of these users are within the Town along with occasional visitors. PUBLIC SKATING TIMES COST Monday 7:15-8:15 13 and up $ 1.50 Thursday 7:15-8:15 6-12 years $ 1.00 Saturday 6:30-7:45 5 and under .50 Sunday 2:00-3:00 Season Pass Single $ 20.00 Family $ 35.00 Ice Rental $40.00 ! hour Children's Party $25.00 ! hour Church Group Parties--No Charge OTHER ACTIVITIES We also have a few rooms used for Other Activities such as: meetings, dance practices, parties, church groups, pre-school activities, etc. SUMMER ACTIVITIES include Auctions; Town Celebration; Fairs; Band Practices; Ball Hockey; Soccer Practices etc. 12 POOL Most of the users here are children ages 5-15. On a hot day there will be an- average of between 75-150 kids - - during the afternoon swim. Weather is always a factor in determining our numbers. During the evening, the older kids come to swim ages 13-18 with some adults as well, the numbers average from 20-50. Other Pool Programs include: Swimming Lessons / Aqua Fit / Bronze Cross and Medallion Adult Swim Lessons / Fitness Swim School Swim / Handicap Swim Most users are Magrath people with some coming from Del Bonita, Spring Coulee, Welling and other nearby towns, with occasional visitors on holidays. 13 BALL DIAMONDS Magrath has four (4) ball fields in town; 3 are active and 1 is in the process of being completed. Most of the diamonds are being used by the Minor Baseball Program and the High School Baseball Program. Their practices start up in early April and games run Nay to mid-July. Magrath has two(2) Senior Women's Teams. One plays in a serious league in Lethbridge, with games been played in Magrath once a week. The other is a Fun League for any that wish to sign up. Softball for Senior Men has nearly diminished and I would like to see it redeveloped. I would also like to see a Co-Ed League start up, as it has become popular within many nearby communities. /4 RACQUET BALL In the past the racquet ball court was used extensively, necessitating patrons book court times. Today the court is used occasionally, although the numbers have' been increasing over the past two years. Most of the users are adults with about a dozen regular users, as well as a few occasional users, including students and some children. There are also a few out of town users. This facility could certainly be used to more advantage. Rates are reasonable. These courts are only being used occasionally and not on a regular basis. ( I guess we need a new "Sparky” to get us all going again. C.T.) Most of the use is by students 13-17 years. There are a few regular adult users. There is no charge for the use of the Tennis Courts. ( A great way to stay in shape.) Thank you Rob. Now you decide if you are using the facilities, that your tax dollars are paying for, to your greatest advantage; Is it worth it to have places and opportunities for our youth to attend? How often are you out enjoying the ENTERTAINMENT activities at these facilities provide? They are.here for EVERYONE'S enjoyment. CONTEST J2 We had arrived during the night; so the early morning rays of sunshine slowly made the panoramic view take shape.The shadowy outlines disappeared and limestone buildings jutted out of every level of the mount before us. There is not a photographer that would not have loved to trade places with me at that moment. The sun seemed to glisten off several of the roofs of some of the structures. My eye seemed to always focus on one building in particular. What was in that unusually shaped structure? Our transportation soon arrived and we wound our way down the narrow road into a valley. As we drove on, I realized that many thousands of graves lined both sides of the valley. It was not an eery feeling, but one of awe and amazement, that so many had lived and died in this land. Over the next 15 minutes, my ears must have popped. 10 times. A large body of water came into view; it looked so inviting. The road hugged the shoreline as we headed southward. The mountains became larger and larger. It seemed like such a contrast in such a short time. Very' little vegetation was evident. Desert was the only word that came to mind to describe the landscape that we travelled through for the next two hours. Suddenly our destination came into view; it exploded with lush vegetation and beautiful blue water accenting the reposing resort of !lElat" WHERE ARE WE? Top Scorers: Andy Beres—17 points Jason Wood—16 points Next Game Thursday Jan.14th in Glenwood. GRADE 9 GIRLS We were defeated 44-31 by Raymond this past week; but the girls all played a good game. Top Scorers for Magrath: Meghan Dahl—11 points Jodi Bullock—6 points ZENITHS , The Magrath Zeniths ran their season's record to 12-0 this past week, with a pair of League wins. Last Wednesday, they received a scare with a close 84-83 victory over Catholic Central. Cristiano Ruy led the Zeniths with 30 points while Danny Balderson had 19, including the game winner with 8 seconds left in the game!!! Bart Harris also added 16 points towards the win. On Friday, the Zeniths crushed the Winston Churchill Bulldogs 113-85 as Danny Balderson poured in 33 points and Cristiano Ruy added 28. Zeniths tangle with LCI in Lethbridge this Friday and travel to Medicine Eat on Saturday. "B" EAGLES The "B” Eagles split their games last week. Catholic Central defeated the Eagles 71-39 with Darren Baker scoring 7 points for Magrath. They then defeated Winston Churchill 64-38 behind the 18 point effort of Dustin Miller and Ryan Henderson. PANDA BASKETBALL CLASSIC On Friday, January 8tb & 9th,1993 the Panda Basketball Classic was held in the Toe Karren Gys. The Pandas beat a very good team from Calgary, Bishop Carrol by a score of 58-44. The Pandas were led by Kathy Dainard and Bonnie Tollestrup with 21 and 17 points respectively. The Pandas then had a poor game; losing to Cardston 49-32. Mindy Cook and Kathy Dainard had 8 points apiece. They then beat the Raymond Cornettes 66-49. They played very well as a team and were led by Sandra Stocker with 26 points and Bonnie Tollestrup with 21 points. Cardston finished first, LCI second and Maqrath third in the Tournament. The Tournament MVP( Most Valuable Player) was Lisa Wallburger from Cardston. MORE MINOR HOCKEY Marath Thunders played Lethbridge in an Exhibition Game Friday, January 8, 1993. Thunders won 9-5. They have their instruments and are taking instructions very well. We plan on performing at the upcoming Spagetti Supper -a Fund raiser for the Band- in the month of February. You will be impressed at how quickly these students learn. They attend on a voluntary basis beyond regular school hours. We plan to enter the Festival in a higher classification ranking. No other band in this area will be competing at this level. We will still have our regular Concert Band, but this is designated as a "Wind Ensemble"-a small select band group.
