Thanks to these strong community-minded women, Magrath has enjoyed many wonderful Christmases. Last Sunday evening we were once again treated to a memorable Christmas Concert. This time Shirley Clifton, teamed with the Magrath Lion's Club, was the driving force. SEE Page 3 for details. "What really impresses me about Magrath is that I feel it is a safe and secure place for my kids. I can send them to play with their friends or to the playground and I don't have to worry. Most people who live here have the same standards I want my children to have. Those whom you don't associate with on a daily basis come through for you in the crunch. So many have done wonderful things for me in difficult times. I've been in Magrath now for 18 years and have no desire to leave." SUBSIDIZED HOUSING SURVEY Alberta Municipal Affairs is conducting a survey to help assess the need for subsidized housing in the town of Magrath through its Sural and Native Housing Program. The Program is designed to provide affordable rental accommodation for low and moderate income families. Applications are open to families either employed or residing in Magrath whose total household earnings do not exceed $26,000. per year. Application forms available at the Town Office. Magrath Hospital Auxiliary Tree of Hope Committee DOG CONTROL Our Dog Control Program has relied on the co-operation of Dog Owners: Owners of dogs in violation of the law are contacted and asked to take care of the problem. Repeat offenses result in the impoundment of the dog involved, and voluntary fines assessed against owners. This philosophy has worked well and problems have been minimal in the past. Unfortunately,some dog owners choose to ignore the provisions of the Dog Control By-law #951 of the Town of Magrath, and as well have ignored the advice and requests of the Dog Control Officer letting their dogs run loose, creating problems for other people. Consequently, the Town's Program must now be an aggressive one: Dogs running at large; barking excessively and other violations will be impounded and applicable costs and fines charged to the owners. Unpaid voluntary fines will be processed through the provincial Court System. All provisions of the By-law will be enforced. 1993 DOG TAGS now at Town Office. After an hour and 43 minutes of sone well played hockey, magrath left the ice with a 5-2 victory. On Tuesday Dec.8/92 we played an exhibition game against the Lethbridge ANAF Flyers. A very one-sided game. Magrath came out victorious with a 7-0 score. NOVICE.HAWKS . hosted a very successful 6 Team Tournament over the weekend of Dec.4-6/92. Each team played through games with the final results as follows: Division A: 1st—Warner; 2nd—Magrath. Division B: 1st—Cardston; 2nd—Taber. Division C: 1st—Raymond;-2nd—Great Falls. Our first game was played Thursday night against Raymond. Led by our goalie Ryan Nishikawa, we managed a 6-3 victory. Goal Getters: Jimmy Balderson 3; Janay Chipman 2; Ryan Flood 1-1; Assists: Sean Stanford, Kyle Schneyder, Peter Lee, Del Thompson, Chris Chatwin and Eric Godionton. The Ml? mini hockey stick was won by Jimmy Balderson. Our second game was against Taber on Saturday morning. Again we managed to pull off a vey impressive win, but this time Chris Chatwin was in the net. Chris was VERY, VERY important and saved our bacon more than once. Goal Getters: Jimmy Balderson 3; Cody Ririe 1-1; Denver Wetherelt 1; Assists: Chris Chatwin, Ryan Flood, Dustin Mandel, and Del Thompson. MVP- Dustin Mandel. Our Final Game was Saturday afternoon at 4:30 against Warner. Although we didn't win, we gave Warner the toughest competition of the tournament. If you remember, last weekend we lost 8-0 in League play—well we managed to put 4 in the net this time. The final score was 9-4 for Warner. Throughout the entire tournament our team played well, (after the pep talk in the dressing room in game #1- right Dani) On Saturday Dec.12/92 we travelled to Fort MacLeod where we played a rather slow almost stand still game. Peter Lee stopped 14 of the 1" shots that came his way. At the end of the first period we were two goals up and at the end of the second we were behind 3-2. By the end of the third, once Danny decided to move Jimmy to the front line, and a few others to the defense, we managed to pull off a 4-3 win, with only 10 seconds left on the clock. Two goals for Jimmy in less than two minutes—GREAT JOB! Dr. Anderson was born in Magrath to Harden H. and Lydia Beatrice Toomer Anderson, September 23,1930 and was valedictorian of the Magrath Graduating Class of 1948. The University of Alberta saw his graduate with a BSc in Agriculture; serve as valedictorian of his class; and receive the Governor General's Gold Medal for the best cumulative grade point average in Agriculture in Canada that year. He earned a BEd. in Secondary Education and taught at Magrath School for two years . He then became a Seminary Principal for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In 1960, he and his wife both earned their Masters' Degrees at BYU in Provo Utah. In 1964 he earned another doctorate degree, this one in Psychology. The family moved to Minneapolis in 1967 with Dr. Anderson accepting a position as Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Minnesota, where he remained for 20 years. A private practice in ¡ferriage and Family Counselling; established while still at the university, he continued after he retired in 1987. Service in the LDS Church was very important to him and he served in numerous positions. Until his death, he served as Patriarch of the Minneapolis Stake. Dr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Barbara Louise Ririe Anderson and seven children. One daughter, Ruth Louise, predeceased him in 1978. Also surviving him are his mother, Lydia Beatrice Tooner Anderson, his sister Ruth Mae Anderson Knight and sister-in-law Bernice Coleman. Funeral Mass was said in St. Basil's on Dec.5,1992 with Father Dennis April Celebrant.
