Mar. 12. ****** Death Notice - former Magrath resident and Magrath School Teacher (1927+) Fanny (Taylor) Kenny: passed away March 8/98 at Kamloops BC in her 96th year. She leaves husband Gordon and two daughters and their families. Funeral in Kamloops, burial later this week in the Magrath Cemetery. ****** May I extend to the Diamond Willow Lodge and staff my thanks for a most entertaining evening programme Tues. Mar. 2 of songs of yesteryear and done by real qualified entertainers. Also thanks to the ones responsible for bringing our friends from the extend-a-care hospital that they cold also enjoy it. One of the reasons we returned back to Magrath was because of the friendly people. Joe Critchfield. ****** IT'S A GIRL!! Blair & Michelle Nack of Square Butte, Montana are delighted at the birth of their 1st daughter, "Makae Frances" Nack on February 10th. The little bundle of joy weighed in at 6 lb. 11 oz. and made her debut at 9:03 p.m. Proud grandparents are Clayton & Connie Boodry of Magrath & Gene Nack of Grafton, Iowa. ****** The hockey season is now over for the Per- Novice Stingers and they finished by playing the biggest team in the whole league, the Monster Moms. Although we were twice the size as most of the Stingers we proved that size doesn't always determine the winner. Our stick handling just wasn't that great and we did have a few great skaters, but most of us could have used a bit more practice. Well, anyways, the result was that we were crushed by those little half pints. Our referee, Mr. Barnett, made us moms feel like real hockey players with all of the penalties he called on us, and half of the Stingers goals were scored by penalty shots. Coach Maxwell also came up with some brilliant strategies, like adding a couple of extra pucks to fire at our goalie, & of putting an extra man on the ice to act as a rover & go wherever he liked. Although there was never any hope of the moms even coming close to winning the game, we still had a great time. I guess that we need to put on the roller blades & begin practicing for next year & with luck we may not be so humiliated next time. ****** Our worthy opponent of this week was the illustrious Raptors of Coaldale. A more likeable coach you will never meet. Behind the formidable J. Ragan we lept to an over whelming lead & never looked back. This was a team we had never beat & who had steamrolled us in the past but skill & luck was on our side as we rolled to a 10-3 victory. We then meandered to their igloo & again skated to a 6-4 decision. In the play that saw the winning goal scored, D. Harker was like a lion ready to pounce. A scrum ensued in front of the net & Harker let go a shot that pasted the goalies chest pad to his spine & as the rebound squirted out & the goalies was jolted back to life with the paddles, Cole B. picked a piece of twine & threaded it with the puck. Friday Mar. 6: K. Aldridge 0-1, C. Schneyder 2-1, Miami Perks 2-2, Conn Barnett 1-1, Cole B. 3-2, J. Ripley 2-0. Sat. Mar. 17: J. Ripley 0-1, Conn B. 2-1, C. Schneyder 1-0, Cole B. 3-1, and that little scrapper who spoke Portugese with the penalty box warden for 6 min, David B.(Brawny) Harker 0-2. ****** Pee Wee Bulldogs We played our 2nd round of playoffs this past weekend. On Fri. Mar. 6, we travelled to Foremost to play our 1st game. We had 2 players put out of the game for hitting from behind & Foremost had I. Our team played awesome! We haven't beaten Foremost on their ice ever, but Fri. we did. The entire team played with all their heart & soul & proof was in the pudding, as we managed to pull off an 8 - 6 victory. This victory was despite the officiating which was not the best to say the least. Shots on goal: Foremost - 34(savcs=26) on Peter 45(saves=39. Goal getters: B. Walkey 3, J. Chipman 2-2, D. Jones 1-1, D. Mandel 1-1, D. Mehew 1-1, assists: 1 each A. Ragan, D. Wetherelt, C. Ririe. Penalties: D. Jones 2, C. Ratke 1, D. Wetherelt 1, D. Mandel 1, J. Harker 1, J. Chipman 1. Our return game was Sun. Mar. 8. This game was totally opposite from the last game in all respects, except for the goal tending which was totally awesome! Foremost played with a lot of zeal, & we had a hard time organizing our plays & getting anything going. This was very evident from the shots on goal on Foremost-17, on Magrath-61. We were tied at the end & played a 10 min. sudden death overtime. The period was short lived when Foremost brought the puck three on two over the blue line, set up very carefully & shot. Our 2 defence men were trying to play goal, & 1 diving player, turned his back on the puck, obstructing the play & the puck was in the net. A very discouraging play for the entire team. Our team left the ice very disappointed & dejected. I would personally like to congratulate the goalie, Peter Lee, who played absolutely fantastic - many of the opposing teams parents approached me to say that he played exceptionally well, to which I agreed. Peter faced a total of 106 shots in the 2 games & only let in 12 goals. Thank you to everyone who helped or supported our team this year. It was a great season & we accomplished alot-sportsmanship, team work, team support(in the good & the bad times), mutual respect, new plays, & an overall general hard work ethic. Thanks to the coaches, Duke Wetherelt, Marvin Lee & Vince Harker - your support of & directional guidance of the team was notice & appreciated.
