Honourable mention to Josh Gruninger with 12 pts during the Coaldale Game. On Saturday the Zeniths & Eagles beat CCH with a 17 pt margin. A good showing to the Magrath Chiefs hockey team for winning the Olds tournament this weekend. Mar. 5 - 8 - Zone Championships Come support our Zeniths on Wed. March 5th when they play LCI @ 7:30 at the Sportsplex. Thur. March 6th they play Raymond at the Sportsplex. ****** 1997 HEART & STROKE CAMPAIGN I would like to thank each & every canvasser who gave so much of their precious time to canvass for the Heart & Stroke Fund. To those who canvassed in the Town of Magrath & especially to those who travelled many miles to cover the rural areas. Mar. 1/97 at the United Church Hall. The United Church ladies served a delicious roast beef dinner to a larger than expected crowd, which was really appreciated. Thank you ladies. Following the dinner, trophies were presented. Guest speaker, Lorne Fitch, Biologist from Lethbridge Fish & Wildlife, gave a slide presentation on Wildlife & Conservation in Africa. Numerous door prizes were given out during the evening. The Club would like to congratulate all the trophy winners and thank the trophy sponsors for their continued support. With the last fading rays we played a fine team from Raymond in play downs. In the 1st game we lost 6-1 with Kit Folkes getting the goal. In our 2nd game we were stymied 4-0. However, our team played upbeat & positive to the end. They tried hard & endured sickness to finish the season. I have never coached a team but I must say this has been a highlight of my life. I have watched this group of skaters become a team & kids that struggled early on the season become great little players. In all the games we played, win or lose, this team stayed up. Each game they entered & ended with enthusiasm. Having supportive parents also made a huge difference & helped to make the season. I am honored to have been these kids coach and so I salute you, Mike Entz, Kit Folkes, David Harker, Jono Holt, Brandy Quellette, Todd Perks, Jeff Ripley, Russell Ririe, Cole Schneyder & Adam Stanford. You are in the dawn of your lives & may you always remember one thing...crow that fly high in sky, cannot build dam with tail of beaver! It started at 8:30 a.m., I'm normally not breathing by then, but we had a good outing. We started out fast and had a 4 - 2 lead going into the 2nd period, then both teams stalled with no scoring at all in the period. We made up for it with 3 goals in the 3rd. The goals were by Conner Barnett with 3, Mitchell Maxwell with 3 and Mackenzie Helgeson with 1. We ended up with a winning score of 7 - 4. The whole team seemed wide awake which was more than could be said for the parents, well this parent anyway. The goaltenders for the game were Amber Foggin, Chase Helgeson, and a surprise sensation in Tyson Hudson much to the surprise of his mother. We also had another game later on in the afternoon with a team from Lethbridge. Maybe it was the fatigue or just the stress of travel, but we were defeated in the 2nd attempt. We lost Conner Barnett early in a crash with the boards and just couldn't recover. The goaltenders were Tyson Hudson, Jason Ragan and Mitch Maxwell. The next game is Monday against the mothers, so I’m sure I'll have alot to write about next week. The Magrath grade 8 boys won their 2nd consecutive Westwinds School Division championship on Saturday by breezing through league and playoffs undefeated. They defeated Glenwood 71 - 47 in the semi-final game and clinched the championship with a 74-53 victory over Cardston. Players on the team are: Czar Toone, Darren Bevers, Ron Woodruff, Jordie Cook, Shane Bly, Chris Chatwin, Brooks Blackmer, Ben Wood, Jimmie Balderson, Mat Harris and Brock Dudley. Artist Amy Dodie's work is colourful oil studies of her children in their garden environment. Carol Robinson's large watercolour is a sentimental image of mother and child, Barbara Goodman's large oil is a bold, moody interpretation of her model. Vincent Luykenaar's watercolour of Pat Hill is luminous with light & life Donna Maclean's watercolour is more of a character type study. Bob Webb's more abstract style goes beyond the portrait to a sensual handling of the paint and in-depth expression. An opening reception will take place at the Yates Gallery, Thursday, March 6, 7:30 p.m. Most of the artists will be on hand to meet the public. The exhibition continues to April 27.
