173 Journalism: The chairman reports the asset to the department of having men instructing who are practicing the craft at the same time. The place which Mr. Sarruf holds in the field of Arabic Journalism is secure. Mr. Parr is corresponding regularly for the New York Times and has broadcast frequently through the N.B.C. The quality of students taking the Journalism program elicits a comment of satisfaction from the chairman. He notes that with the prospects of a larger graduating class next year the need for making contacts with possible employers is great. Unless a school can assist in placing its graduates from a professional or semi-professional course, the course is not likely to be regarded with favor by prospective students. Social Science: In making adjustments to the new curriculum it was necessary, for this year, rather arbitrarily to decide to put the Sophomores and Juniors together for the course in History of the Near East, taught by Mr. Sarruf for three hours a week throughout the year. The Seniors were given a special course - Near East History for one semester and Problems of the Near East the second semester. Hereafter the History of the Near East will be a Sophomore course. Comment is made upon the excellent response of students in the courses of psychology and economics. Physical Education: Under handicap of limited staff the Physical Education depart-ment reports some good work accomplished. There has been intensification of the intra-mural program. In inter-scholastic competition our teams of track and basket ball have brought distinction to the school by earning the terms of 'good sports-manship' 'most sportsmanlike'. The chairman read a paper at a mission teachers conference upon physical education; the paper was influential in stimulating new viewpoints on the subject and calling forth requests for help. Relations with the inspectorate of the Ministry are constantly improving. The most notable event of the year was the Intra-mural track meet held on the field of the National Sporting Club. The program was very well organized. The American Minister was present, and offered a cup which he has since delivered to the College. It is the most magnificent cup which we have had in our possession; it is the Minister's wish that scholarship be taken into account in its award as well as athletics. Health: The University Doctor reports his satisfaction with the progress of his work and the general improvement in the state of health of the student body. He points out•the need of an isolation room for the hostel in case of contagious illness. Science and Mathematics: Much of the teaching program of science had to be hastily recast last autumn when Habib Eff. tendered his resignation. The chairman contem-plates with pleasure the arrival of a short-term teacher to help in the teaching of chemistry. For too long the department has been without the assistance of a second qualified American teacher. Special courses in physics and mathematics were given for a group of sophomores. Such courses will hereafter be regularized by the establishment of the Science sequence. Foreign Language: During the second semester the Sophomores received instruction and practice in speech under the direction of a trained phonetician; this was introduced by reducing the literature program by one period. Sixth Form English was taught by Dr. Rand, who, himself took the Matriculation examinations and had taught the program. I am not convinced that we have much to gain by having an Englishman teach the Matriculation program, especially now that the examin-ation has taken on a less formidable character.
