The phrase intersemiotic translation was coined by Roman Jacobson in order to classify that kind of translation, which is made from one medium to another. Such a concept includes, for instance, the adaptation of a literary work to film. In his book Tradução intersemiótica, Julio Plaza claims that the process o intersemiotic translation, when applied to aesthetic production, is a process of signic transmutation, of recreation. Thus, such a type or translation admits the possibility of a certain inventivity to be openly connected to a previous work.
