Hypericum perforatum, known as St. John´s wort, is one of the most famous and best investigated medicinal plant. Hyperforin identified as the major constituent responsible for the main pharmaceutical effects (the treatment of mild to moderate depression) of the extract. It is light, oxygen, and temperature sensitive hydrophobic acylphloroglucinol derivative with several prenyl and one geranyl side chains. However, its biosynthetic pathway is not yet completely understood.
